Ok, the discussions about beer, wine, and cigars got me to thinking about another of my habits... wine. Now, as a youngun I drank the wonderful MD 20/20 and called that wine, then I found Boone's Farm, yeehaw! Nowadays, I am a little more selective in my wine choices. I keep a rack full in the cellar with about 20-30 bottles at any given time. I started drinking better wine after moving to CA and realizing that the wine Mom gets in the cardboard box wasn't all that good... Currently, I am a big fan of Pinot Noir especially ones grown around here. Anything from 2003 is usually good for this area. York Mountain Pinot Noir is selling for $5 a bottle at Trader Joe's right now and is a good example. Old Moon is a good Zinfandel my wife and tried the other day, and from the same vineyard is a Sangiovese called Tuscan Moon. My favorite vineyard for tasting and for generally good wines and fun is Tobin James cellars in Paso Robles. There main red is called Chateu de lecacheflo (or just cashflow) and like the aforementioned wines is good with most foods or alone. I generally stay with smoother wines like the above but I do like syrah on occasion and will drink a cabernet here and there. The cabs I have tried from 03 seemed to have aged well and I enjoy the ones aged in oak. I hardly drink whites but occasionally will drink Meridian chardonnay with my wife because it's her favorite. I prefer Tobin James Reserve Chardonnay if I'm gonna drink white, though. It is aged in oak and has a little more buttery flavor to me. I pretty much stay away from Merlot (and did so even before the movie came out) Let's see some other stuff I like...Red Truck, Big House Red, and the occasional two buck chuck.... It's a good time to be a wine drinker because pretty much every wine I mentioned is less than $10 a bottle. I don;t even bother trying higher priced stuff because there are so many great bargain wines.
My wife is a wine-o. Not really, she likes very fruity wines. Port. We have some Irish Vineyards Apricot wine from Vallecito, ca. Very thick, sweet-dessert stuff.
OMG wouldn't it be nice to pick up a 5 $ bottle of wine. in my corner of the world try 15$ for bottle of wine. real cheap stuff hard to fine one for 10$.i guess thats why we have to make our own brew in our basements.
Moscato D'Asti's are very nice. They are just a tad bubbly and not too sweet. Ice wines and dessert wines are another favorite of mine. Best deserrt wine I've ever had was $39.00 bucks and it was from Prince William Winery in Virginia. I went to the VA wine festival which is a great event to attend, but have a designated driver! It really allows you to discover what you will enjoy. The dessert wine was so good I really can't describe it... I also enjoy Reislings, Voingers (spelled wrong but pronounced Vee-in-ya) and the various French Vouvrey's. I live near an awesome wine store. Its in Lewes, Delaware (Teller Wines is the name) and the people who own and run it are the cats ass. Once they know what you like they can just peg you and their recommendations have never been bad. Yes, even us scags have taste! The wife loves reds. Like KC, she has a thing for Shiraz's. She likes Merlot too. BZ
yeah, it's pretty cool to live in the heart of wine country if you like wine. you can do wine limo tours for $50 a person and that includes tastings and lunch and make for a good memory. you and me both, bro. I grew up very near the Mississippi River. I sledded on a hood pulled behind a Scout on the levee cause we didn't have any hills. We used to have levee parties or river parties pretty much every weekend. My father-in-law likes to take dessert wine and pour it on icecream...
