I searched the forums for info on batteries and didn't really see anything. I am about to replace my R/R when it arrives, and was planning to replace the wiring and battery as well (the stator checked out okay). Sooo to get to my question, what batteries would you guys recommend? I'm willing to spend a bit of money for a better battery, but want a few opinions. I've looked into a few gel cell batteries and had mixed emotions. I assume they would be better (I believe they are more resistant to vibration) but I am not sure. As always, I figured I could ask the experts to see what you have all experienced.

There are only a few companies that actually manufacture batterries. Most of the batterries are rebadged units built to a said vendors spec. which usually determines the price. The lower priced batterries are usually second rate or just barely perform to mfg. spec. This being said I run Deka (East Penn mfg) when they offer one for my application. Deka batterries have met or exceeded OEM performance. Deka is available for the '98. If a Deka isn't available I run Yuasa which is the OEM. Constant use of a maintenance charger is also a must.

I just bought a new battery.

I wanted the best also. I could NOT find an Optima for it even listed. I ended up with a AGM (Advanced Glass Mat) type. Totally sealed, not electrolyte to add/replace, no vent required. Carried by O'Reilly Auto Parts in the Texas area.
180 CCA. I figured as good as I can get.

I hook it up to a trickle charger after every ride, but I am now on my second and a half (don't ask) R/R. I don't like walking, and am in the process of redoing the entire charging system to get these issues behind me. Thanks for the responses.

Ran into this just a few weeks back and through a lot of research that there wasn't a lot of choices, realy was hoping to find an Optima. or Odessy. So went with the recommended one from Honda, which just so happens to be built by interstate via Yusa, go figure.

I have always had good luck with Yuasa batteries. Most everyone one I know and but from says the same. Changed the battery in my 2002 VFR800 for the first time after 16.5K miles.

Make sure that you check the voltage on the battery before you leave the shop. Most [motorcycle] batteries should be just over or at 12V idle; mid 13V when charging. If the battery is under 12V when you buy it, have the store throw it on the charger; will take about an hour to get up. Batteries in stores are often lower than they should be, due to long periods of idleness on shelves. VFR one more so than others as there are less VFR's on the road.
