The Yamaha V-Max has always been quite the machine and the new version is a beast. I have a friend that has an 85 (original unrestricted) and the new mutant. Both will smoke the tire in third at a 40mph+ roll. Fun to watch.

Ducati made a lmited run of the Moto GP based V4 Desmosedici and besides the already mentioned mad as a cut snake Vmax Yamaha also made a tame v4 cruiser called the Royal Star, don't know of any VFR like V4's from other manufacturers.

Interesting, a large capacity V4 with Dual overhead valves and pushrods, guess that would give it a lower engine height and good torque but hints at being more a relaxed sporty tourer than Sports tourer.

Not a v4 but Horex are bringing out a V6 supercharged motorcycle which also looks interesting.

I assume you mean current production, not historical? Cause there's been quite a few...

yeah, that seems to be the trend in sport touring now. the adventure bikes seem to be what people are plugging the hole left by the 90s VFRs with. It seems a little leaky to me, but hell, what do I know about marketing? I have been riding the same bike for the last 50000 miles...

My fav if we're talking historical but it would be square 4, Suzuki RG500. Then you have a couple of other v4 2-smokers that were out there. The Yamaha Rz500 comes to mind. I have a friend in Iowa with an RG500 that has won the Dyno test in Daytona a few years running. I think the last time it won the under 750cc with 132+rear wheel hp. That's some serious stuff. Here's some links if you want to read about it.

    Randy's RG500
    Randys

    The Yamaha RZ500 V4
    RD500LC V4

2-stroke V4's : MZ, engine built by Suter in Switzerland 200hp+ (Dutch rider ; J van der goorbergh)
Patton, Italian built , privately financed, family buisness.
Cagiva, Italian production. riders :Lawson , Mamola and Kocinski rode it for 6 years won 1 race (by Lawson)
The big three: Honda , Yamaha, Suzuki all entered V4 with different layouts: Honda Single Crankshaft, Yamaha two crankshaft counter rotating , Even Disc valves for the 125 and 250 V4, Suzuki XR models more or less the same engine layout as Yamaha.
I miss the smokers on the track, so I built my own: HONDA NS 400R, 2-stroke Tripple.

Mad things then and still. Have sent the link to a mate who is an RG nutter. In his current stable he has 2 RG500s, 2 RGV250s and an RG500 engined modded RGV250 with a pristine '89 GSXR750RR and a slightly untidy ex full race '89 GSXR750RR thrown in for good measure.

Just discussion but Suzuki has one they most definatley could homogelate .The GSV-R

It's rumored their 2012 liter bike will be very special -< quoting inside sources >

With the GP electronics developed in house , claimer rules coming to GP racing, bringing back the 990's for the 2012 GP racing along with the tooling for the original 990 engine did not have to be changed for the current 800 - well , it might just happen.

They were stirring up some press about it in 2009 when they took it to the Isle of Mann for a go around . Clocked at 202 MPH on one of the shorter straights. Potent for sure.

    We'll see fall this year.

It would be for awhile and that's what i like about competition between motorcycle companies. It would about force Honda to get on past the inline engines for the liter Super Sports.
