Well idk if posting this thread will motivate me or not but in regards to my last thread I realised I have no idea what I'm fuckin' doing.

This is my 1986 Honda vf500f interceptor that I bought and my dad and I picked up together in October of 2022. Since then I've worked on the gas tank and then gave up for a while due to work and lack of motivation to work on it.

The gas tank was/is in complete disrepair.

I managed to get it sand blasted, then proceeded to use JB weld as a temporary fix for the swiss cheese of holes in the tank. I felt it was almost too much work for the reward as it's dented bad and in that spot there's a ton of bondo on the top of the tank.

I'm gonna look into doing a compression test as somebody mentioned in the previous thread.

409,113km on the odometer for those interested

WOW ! I've never heard of a VF500 doing over 400,000km. someone must have done alot of oil changes if she still runs.

As mentioned in the other post, in addition to the compression check, pop the cam cover off and inspect those cam shafts. Make sure the lobes are in good shape.

Post some pics of the old girl

Do you think the motor could have been redone at some point without the odometer rolled back?

Edit: changed rollback to rolled back

The guy i bought it from said it ran and he rode it at some point. But it sat for a long time in his shop before i bought it from him. I was gonna buy it back in 2017 but didn't end up doing it. When i found out he still had it i jumped on it in 2022. It just sat in the shop for 8 years. Im assuming outside for a bit at one point

    anything is possible

the odometer is never supposed to be rolled back, even if the engine is redone, thats illegal

but the current condition of the engine, should be your #1 concern and priority

Check the cams and compression and if they're good, proceed, if they're bad.... think hard and long before you put any more $ into it. The Juice wont be worth the squeeze if the engine is bad.

where in Canada are you ? im in near north Ontario

I'm in Southern Ontario. In the Chatham Kent County.

It's cool to see people somewhat local on here.

In regards to the compression. I'll look into it. I have the Clymer repair manual which should tell me the basics of what to do. I'm unsure of what I'm looking for with the cams though.

You my find some pics here or online of what bad VFR cams look like. Basically your looking for Scoring, Pitting, flat spots on the lifter lobes, etc.

someone may have pics handy they can post or take some good clear pics when you get the cam cover off and show each of the lobes of both Cams.

guys here will chime in and tell you if they look bad in any obvious way.

Ditch the Clymer manual and find the OEM Honda manual. Trust me.

Welp. The hose that connects the tank to the front left cylinder is missing. Is it possible there was a modification for the 86 model that replaced this?
