Did Honda make a change to the v-tec system recently. Like in '05 or '06 and did it adversly effect the almost legendary VFR reliability?

If so why was this change made?

I was poking around here and couldn't quite get a clear answer.

Official model year change was 2002, however, it was available in late 2001 as an '02 model. 2002 to present is 6th gen with VTEC. In later years (6th gen still) they improved the VTEC transition and many riders complained it was too abrupt in the earlier VTEC years.

Honda is always into trying to apply new technology in their products, and they had had success with the VTEC in their cars for years already, so I guess they figured to give her a go in one of their bikes. They went back to cam chains possibly looking to reduce the increased friction loss from gear-driven cams. I think the last statement is baloney, as I believe any power gained back from the switch was very minimal. They were looking to makeover the bike, reduce cost where possible, and attract attention with the new bells and whistles. In my opinion, they made it more complicated (VTEC) and took away a good thing (the gear driven cams).

Honda tweeked the engagement point of the Vtec down to about 6200 from 7000 in '06 to smooth out engagement. Same reliability.

Thanks for the link and info guys.

I was curious because when I inquired at the dealer I was told the bike really didn't sell well after '05 and with the design change came reliability issues.

First I had heard of such a thing.

I certainly understand the sales drop off as if you are looking for max performance in a street bike there are cheaper options on the sales floor.

But as far as doing what the bike was built for ie: sport touring I don't think it has any equals.

Now off to read that link

    Well the link was entertaining.
The dealer any myself are $800 apart on a left over '06. I'll give it the rest of the day to see if he comes around.

The 6th gen is a great bike, and it just as reliable from what I have heard. A certain year had a wiring harness recall, but, I think that would have been taken care of on an '06 by now.

Don't fret about reliability, I would worry more about if you like the looks of a 6th gen, and can you afford one. Like I said, they are great bikes.
