Recently my clock and my trip meter have been resetting them selves every time I start my bike. This only started happing since the fall and the winter weather have been hitting. I have searched for threads on this issue and it seems that if this was a problem with the RR my bike would stop running, but my bike still starts everytime. I'm not sure if I'm in need of a new battery or if it is the dreaded RR problem. Any advice on this would be much appriciated.
Make sure your battery cable connections,positive and negative,are clean and tight. Make sure that the negative battery cable connection to the frame and the green negative wire harness wires that connect to the frame are clean and tight as well. My bike has had this exact same problem. Simply cleaning and tightening the wire connections cured the problem on my bike. Hope this helps you. Good Luck.
Could be time for a new R/R. On my bike these symptoms were the precursor to the R/R failing. Go for easy fixes first and clean up the connectors. There are several good search threads on diagnosing R/R issues.
someone posted a diagnostic to go step by step just to check the battery and r/r... I wish I could remember where it was... did you try looking in the wiki? it might have been in there somewhere... anyway, go for the easy fixes first, but it does sound a bit like r/r issues... although a while back I was having that same prob, thought it was my battery but after tightening up everything and charging it well, it seems to have resolved. (I already have the updated r/r) I prob should get a new battery, though as I know mine is over 3 years old...
Thats what happened on mine before the total R/R death. Seems it doesnt do a sudden failure but just a gradual demise. And also in the process, it seems to take the battery with it. So it seems that if the battery is screwed the R/R is screwed and if the R/R is screwed the battery is toasted too. -This is just my observations from my own bike and reading um-teen hundred R/R theads. -- Just jump out and buy the Honda upgraded R/R, buy a harness upgrade from - Wire My Bike and hope your battery is still alive. -(I had to buy a battery too.) I did the whole hog, and since then I have not had one hint of an electrical issue. BTW - I am a electrically deviant challenged mechanic. I can barely figure out a light circuit.
