I am new to the site. I have owned 11 motorcycles. Just sold a nighthawk and own a Honda 919. I have never owned a VFR,but have decided I must have one. I need help. Some say the 98-01 is the best and others praise the 02-06 versions. Help!! Jim Spadafore
okay, I'll say it first...the 6th Gen is the better of the two  . Actually, I can't comment since I've never ridden a 5th gen, but it's been a while since I've read a "which gen is better" battle here
5th gen gets my vote. I've been ridden all 6 generations of the VFR. 5th is definitely the best. KC-10 FE out...
Boy you sure like to start hot topics don't you. I ride a 6th gen and love it but there are lots who ride the 5th and say its best. Have only riden a 5th once so can't comment too much on them. You probably just have to ride both to see which suits you the most.
The 1995 model is clearly the best..........heh....no really Seriously though, you will probably find that everyone here has their own opinion on this matter, and it's likely going to be the same as the model they are riding. I'm sure you already know that the Gen 6 (02-06) did away with the gear-driven cams and added VTEC to the valvetrain....some likey, some no likey. Aside from that, they are very similar in terms of performance, ergo's, build-quality, etc. I've not ridden either of the Gen 5 or Gen 6 models, so I really can't comment, except from the peanut gallery. I suggest you go look at a nice example of each model and see which one ya fancy more, ride them if you can, and then decide which one is right for you. Your mileage will most certainly vary.... Mike
I'm gonna be different and say go old school. There's something about having a bike that you don't see everyday. That's the way it is with the 1st Gen VF1000F and even better the VF1000R. I'm having an absolute blast with my 1984 VF1000F. Sure, it's not a VFR800, but the thing flat out hauls... I actually am beginning to enjoy the rawness of the VF1000. I know that the VFR800 is far more refined. I wouldn't be surprised if this 23 year old bike was every bit as fast in a straight line as the VFR800. I need to ride the VFR800, somehow I think I would be hooked. If I had to buy a newer one it would probably be a pre-VTEC gear driven one. (Like a 98.) I happen to agree with many others that it looks like it may be the best of the bunch so far.
You sure know how to make a entrance!!! You've open up a can of worms my friend, this topic could cause a Civil War!!! A lot depends on what kind of rider you are, If your a aggressive rider and love sport riding with corners and speed, the 4th or 5th generation is for you. If your more touring oriented and still like the capabilities the 6th gen has for sport riding, maybe the 6th is for you. The 6th generation is a heavier bike but has a lot of newer technology that the 4th & 5th don't, some of it better, and some not so better. I would love to elaborate more on this subject, but I don't want to throw down with all the 6th generationers  So that being said, this is my opinion only...
I think we can all agree that the VFR won the most awards during gen 5, though. I don't know if has one a best bike since that generation, has it?
If I remember correctly, the 2002 model won Cycle World's "best streebike" categroy but I don't think it's won since that first year of the 6th gen.
