ok, I have another project I would like someone to take on. Let's organize factors that are important about choosing oil, come up with a rating system, then make a little log that we can point to when someone wants an opinion about oil...

who wants to get it together? if we can get a similar rating system to use for several of these types of things, it'll give us a little consistency across the board...

    say A, B, C, D, E, F or 1-10 or stars or 1-5 smilies or whatever...

I think knowing what oil does and why would help a lot of folks. While Oil used to be oil not so much anymore. I think people do not understand a lot of what goes into the oil they use. As a start, you have base stocks then you add in additive packages and you have oils that are designed for different tasks.

I am not sure this isn't opening up a huge can of worms tho. There are LOTS of opinions in the area of oil. I belong to other forums and it is just as much a hot button on those sites as it is here.

Just like some folks change their oil based on milage some change based on time or milage and some just time. Basically, if you are only changing every 3K you could be making a mistake if you only put 1K per year on your bike. Nasty asidic stuff builds up over time. That is why a rule of 3K/4k/5k or 6mo. what ever comes first for oil changes is a good practice. Some people would poo-poo that tho.

I use full syn and I do so beacuse it works best for me, my bike and my riding style and habbits.

Others would say I'm dumb to spend that much money on the synthetic.

    See....Can of worms open yet?

Personally, I think having a list of most used oils and why might be good to have around But what would we do without the weekly opinionfest.

:soapbox: Bye and Good luck on the project. BTW. If this looks to be something that is wanted, I would be more than happy to contribute.

I guess what I am saying is yeah, this would be a good project. I'd like to help. I also think it may need or shoudl have a decent primer on motor oil. then types/brands/different qualities and why we use them.
