Well I went and did my first oil change last night and noticed this black thing and was wondering what it is and if I need it. Looks like there is a hose missing to the top of it. I also found a hose that was plugged at one end and had nothing plugged into the other end. One end was touching my pipe by were my rear shock is and the other was routed into where the other overflow hoses go under the bike by the drain bolt. I'm ready to put my bike on a diet so please let me know if some of this stuff can go.

    Thanks,

    t

Looks like a carbon canister for the emissions system.

    +1 carbon can.
If you trash it make sure you plug any other lines that go to it.

Yes that is the carbon cannister, you do not need it if you are willing to undo the emissions stuff that makes the bike Cali legal. No, there is not supposed to be anything hooked to that port. The hose you found is prolly the battery drain hose. Take a look at the battery on the side and see if there is a port without a hose.

    so Happy

I am so happy someone else thought the same as me. I did my first oil change last week, and I wondered about that canister and the open line.
I went to the manual and looked like nothing connected to that.

I got my bike used, it had been wrecked so I was not sure if something was not put back together right.

Thanks for all the quick replys. I'm not worried about keeping it cali legal so I may start removing stuff and put her on a diet. Is there anything I should know (other than to plug the hoses that run into the carbon can) since I don't want to make my bike run like crap.

Just one thing, and I could be wrong about this. I'm no lawyer, I'm not an environmentalist, or anything else so take this for what it's worth. Just mentioning it for what it's worth.

Keeping it Cali legal isn't the issue. The bike came with that canister as part of the factory-installed emission system. Tampering with the emission system in such a way as to disable it, modify it, or change it's operation is a federal offense. I read somewhere, not sure if it was the owner's manual or service manual or what, that Honda considers the mufflers that are factory installed to be part of the emission system and as such simply changing the cans is a federal offense. If you live in a jurisdiction that requires annual inspections that might become an issue.

Personally I wish they'd get off this emissions kick, but it ain't gonna happen.

Thanks Scraig and I understand where you're coming from. I bought my bike used and it already had aftermarket exhaust. The owner said the stock exhaust was long gone. I just want that stuff gone to make working on the bike easier and hopefully make it run better. I don't ever plan on living in Cali but I will keep everything I take off. I think if they are going to start inspecting they should start with older bikes and those loud V-twins with the straight pipes. Mine at least still has the cat on it and the pipes are not loud at all.
