This is my first bike with a digital engine temp readout.

What engine temp might a rider expect to see if he did a warm-bike 4th gear roll-on from 85 to 140 indicated on a sunny 85° day, and held it there a bit? Would 228° be normal?

Have any of you desert boyz ever heard of someone holding 140 in 100° weather? Did she say whether it made her hot, and if so, how hot exactly? Also, what's the highest engine temp she saw?

    Thx!

its like 80 and muggy here today, pulling back into the garage (yes it's ohio and it started raining again for 20th straight day) it was at 215 and the fan was on, if i go 60 mph for abit temp will drop 190-200 then when i stop goes back up to 210-215, i dont think ive seen it hit 220.

i dunno know about the rollon part to 140 but seems the faster i go the cooler my temp is. maybe around 140 w/ those high rpm in 4th its hotter, ive taken it to 100 but i wasnt looking at temp and was past 4th.

    Let me clarify...

The roll-on starts in 4th, but obviously ends in 6th at near top speed, held there for a bit. Hypothetically.

What's normal peak temps for that kind of thing?

I chill out when i see over 200, but others will say its fine as the fan doesn't come on till 225 and the warning light comes on at 250. not that I condone those temps, but 228 is still below what Honda deems dangerous.

On a 85° day the temp you mentioned seems a little high considering the amount of airflow passing over the bike. These bikes tend to overheat when riding in stop and go traffic on warm days but once you get moving and get the air flowing the temp usually drops. Exactly how long are you maintaining your top speed?

We flying thru LA after R3 outside temp were 110
The bike temp is hovering about 215 to to 225 depend on our speed
We rode around central coast with unspecified speed limit :tape2: the bike temp never go past 220 at @ 80 outside.

at 220 the fan should be on, trying to cool it down. Does it kick on? I've never seen about 225, even in the humid heat of the midwest.

I've noticed the temp rise when i hold upper VTECH for extended pulls.

I'll keep it bouncing shy of redline up to 150+ indicated (closed course) and notice my temp will rise 20-25 degrees when i finally come to a stop. I usually don't maintain that speed for an extended period of time, but based on the temp change I've experienced I wouldn't be suprised if it crept into that range if given enough time. Just remember, if you see 225 your fan should be on but even if it does come on like it should it will be useless at that speed.

I have been having these same concerns/fears about similar temperatures in similar conditions on my 5th gen Y2K. All in all it seems normal and that huge temperature gauge just screws with my head. I would put a piece of duct tap over it except I would worry about what the reading was.

I'm curious about a couple of things. First is, what is the usual indicated engine temp that you guys see your fans kick on? Mine is right at 224-225 which is what I hear most often but I just read NIH mention his was on at 215............I guess it could have been on and was cooling down, anyway, secondly, does humidity play much if any part in mechanical operating temperature? I mean like it does with people? It doesn't seem like it would but I don't know my physics that well.

    Thx!

Yah, my fan comes on at ~220 or so. During the run, the bike was ~210-215. I saw the peak 228 when I pulled over after a 2 minute run.

I lit it up again and the airflow brings the temp right down.

It's good to know what you cali boys are seeing.

    Thanks to all...

My bike hit 238 a few times today riding around in high humidity and mid 90 degree temps.
I know the coolant in the overflow tank is at the low end of full. And the antifreeze looks new. Thoughts?

I rode about 160 miles today at sustained speeds from 40 miles per hour to over 100 miles per hour & the temp never went over 200 while moving. the highest temp I saw sitting at a light was 217 degrees. The fan kicked on the temp promptly went back bellow 210 degrees. Ambient air temperature was in the low 90's with high humidity.

My ride was about the same- 150mi and I only had the fan kick on while sitting in some pretty terrible red light traffic on the alst 20mi

    Moving temp was 185+/-7

Mine was the same give or take a degree. I would think that 238 was excessive heat. Did you get that temp sitting or were you underway?

    Just as an FYI.

Cooling systems should be flushed & coolant replaced AT LEAST every 2 years. ALL my vehicles get this treatment.

Why? Because coolant will break down over time, becoming more caustic, losing it's lubricating properties (think water pump seals), and causing issues in the passages. Definitely use distilled water!

It's not an expensive maintenance procedure & will save you a LOT of headache.

Do I need special honda coolant? Should I put in water wetter?
I know to use distilled water 50:50 to coolant right?

50/50 mixture, make sure the coolant is aluminum safe (most are now). I use Toyota Red in all my vehicles (great for mixed metals engines, I.e., steel block/aluminum heads). It's a little pricey, but I figure worth it. IMO water wetters are unnecessary & if you have to use them, you're masking another issue.

Mine hit 238 in traffic the other day as well, did not want to drop back below 225. That's Hotlanta traffic for you though. I'm running about 50% Distilled, 25% Coolant, 25% Water Wetter changed and flushed this spring and T6 Rotella. Normally my temps are around 225 whether I am at 65 mph or 150 mph. Still cooler than my Concours I suspect.
