Anyone got any recommendations of possible problem areas that I should know about on the '99 VFR. I'm going to check one out on Sat. and it would be good to know what to look out for. The bike has 20k miles, new sprockets and chain, adult owned, "very slight" cosmetic damage on the right side.

When's the next major service? TX - MrW

Have they had the valves checked/adjusted at 16k?
Have they had any R/R and/or stator problems?
Have they done any R/R and/or stator upgrades?
Does the owner have a maintenance history, or do they give you a good vibe that they know what they are doing....as in being meticulous with maintenance?

Other than that, check for frame/fork/rim/rotor/swingarm damage.

Its the regulator/rectifier, some of these bikes have problems because of the stock placement,it dosent let the unit get enough cool air and the unit sometimes fries itself. There are a few tricks we have for cooling down the unit, plus Honda has manuf. a replacement unit with larger fins and a much bigger heat sink.

if you do a search there are a lot of threads about the R/R probs. if they have already upgraded it you are prob ok, if not, you might want to. I think you do the valve check at 32k if I remember correctly. I am way past due on checking mine, though so if you ain't hearin the tappin, you are probably ok... I'm kinda like Jason, I go a lot with the vibe I get from the person and from the bike. I knew my bike was for me without riding it. I saw it, saw his maintenenace schedule written out on a dry erase board for all his vehicles, heard the engine growl, and took the cash out of the bank the next day.

all that & bring a bottle of water with you

ask permission to push the bike on a flat smooth surface (aka driveway, or sidewalk) poor the water out on the ground & walk the bike through the wet spot.
on the other side of the wet spot you will see the tyre tracks & should be only 1 line, if the bike has been damaged (with exception of rake damage) there will be 2 lines or a slightly off set single line.

This is the simplist & quickest way to ck the alignment since most likely you didn't bring a M/C shop with you.

Also if the guy is of good character, if the bike looks good to you, ask if a shop can ck it out on your dime, & he should do it (better to loose a few bucks than major ones).

p.s. armor all on a bike to me looks like there hiding something, the bike should simply look clean & no solvent or carb cleaner residue on the motor (tall tail sign he cleaned off leaking oil).

    Good Luck,
