I know what my bike weighs, and I know what I weigh, when looking through the shop manual I see max payload is 386lbs. Hmm not that I pack anywhere near that, But I do know folks use this as sport tourer going two up with gear. Thats gota be knocking on the door of being over loaded. Now that I know, was wondering if anyone here has had issues with not being able to pack enough due to the weight limits.. Vman need not answer :)

Unless you weight 300 lbs, I would think if you had more than 168 lbs of gear you needed to haul its time to down size....either the rider or the gear

Are you implying that Vinnie is "skinny" ! I honestly have never taken the weight of myself and my load into consideration. Maybe I should. I guess I'm just a loose cannon though. "Testing the limits of machine and man".

Old iron(86'), but I took my wife for a short ride on mine last summer, my self hitting the scale near the:eek: #300 range & we won't discuss pillion weight(honestly because I don't know, she just complains about it alot). Handling was way messed up even to the point of being a bit scary. Myself & overnight gear or my lap top & other work related stuff no issues there.

My buddies 1400 Intruder works well for both of us though!

Yeah, we prolly have had this discussion. It would be nice to weigh a little more, but someone upstairs must have thought this was a good size for me. Not sure what they were thinkin tho. lol

back to the original question.....correct me if i am wrong but "payload" refers to the maximum ideal weight to get the best estimated gas mileage and power on any given day not the gross weight....

Means the max you can carry for safe suspension / riding . Not the BEST riding.

And here I thought RVFR was going to come with something about how 6th GEn is porkier than 4th, not a good progression for Honda I would add. I saw 557 wet in MotorCyclist but who knows what they are smokin:tea:

Makes you think of leaving everything(one) behind but the Wild Turkey.

The 6th gen (05) says 399 us and 408 canadian (why canadian has 9 more pounds I don't care to guess ... are they denser LOL). I suppose if both riders were around 200 lbs they'd have a problem ... like maybe she should follow in a sedan  I have calculated same when wifie wants to ride and we add up to around 300 lbs ... stuff maybe 40 .... suspension jacked up all the way. No problem until the slow parking lot stuff. Much prefer solo ... shhhhh (need to convince her we need an st1300 for double up) Boy I do rattle sometimes .....

Yes that is right. Also I find that a payload at about 215 including gear the Gen 6 is a little undersprung even with max preload so I would definitely not want to push it two up with gear. I doubt anything would break at 400lbs but the handling is going to be suspect to say the least. Mind you I think you are crazy to push it 2 up anyway. The balance just isn't right. I have always considered the VFR to be a good one person bike. If I was doing any serious two up I would go with an ST1300 or FJR1300 or similar, or the couch of course.
