"For the most part, the others wave back. I would say that most HD riders respond when they are by themselves, but when they are with others it seems to go down. Maybe they don't want to look like wimps or something in front of the other HD riders."

I find the same thing. HD rider by him/herself, very friendly. Put them in a group, response is much lower. I do the point at the ground. Standard "I'm a cool biker" wave. 99% of the sport bikes and a huge amount of scooter gangs. Even in groups. I think there is a 'divider wall' rule that states:

    1. Thou shall not wave if thou are divided by concrete in any form.
    2. Thou are exempt from feeling any remorse for missing a wave if thou are divided by more than 3 lanes.
    3. If thou are waved at first, thou shall respond in kind.
    4. Thou shall wave at all police, no matter what speed thou is traveling at.

    Any more?

I don't wave, but I do stick out two fingers for a bike, and three for a trike. I do this every time I see another rider. Sometimes it's tough in a tight curve.

I usally nod. Since I am new to the riding world, I don't do much more than that. I am afraid if I do a fist towards the ground it is a gang sign for something...
