I'm going to do a valve clearance check on a friend's 04 VFR.
Does anybody who's done this have a set of the slide pin stoppers (at least 4) that I could borrow.

    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

spike, can you post a pic and give us some sizes.
I can imagine they are anything more then a roll pin or something to that effect

"hlf" a member of the VFR Discussion has answered my request.
When I get them I'll post up sizes if still needed - I wouldn't trust my abilities to attempt to fabricate something like this until I actually use one. I'd be afraid of scoring an internal oil passage with a rough edge.

    Thanks for the consideration.

don't have a pic of them handy, but they are just little disc shaped pieces of metal. Like smaller in circumferance than a pencil eraser and maybe an 1/8" thick, very small pieces of metal indeed.

    Here's the lowdown:
The slide pin stoppers are are metal discs with a 5.94mm radius x 2.5mm thick
    (.234in x.099in is what I mic'd them at)
You could McGyver a substitute, but be careful:
Bigger won't fit, much smaller (especially in the thickness) and there would be the danger that when you remove the tappet after checking the clearance, the slide pin would stay in the bore and your makeshift stopper would fall out into the engine when you pull pull the slide pin out. So make sure the slide pin assembly will stay in the tappet bucket when inverted before placing above the valve.

The maintenance manual lists two part numbers for the slide pin stoppers:
    07XMZ-MCE100
    07XMZ-MCEA100
Service Honda lists 0XMZ-MCE100 for $19.20
They list 0XMZ-MCEA100 for the same price, and also indicate that it's a package of 8. (I only got the first number as a reference before I had the manual and that's when I put out the call to borrow some)

edited to correct the part numbers

Either number should get you the same set of 8, but use the A version so there's no question about the quantity.

(edited my earlier post, typo on the part numbers)

My best friend and I determined that the cost benefit of shimming the VTEC valves back within spec is nill. Each bucket (with built in shims) is nearly $50 so just the VTEC valves alone puts the price at $400 even if you do the work yourself. Finding a replacement motor if his ever goes which is unlikely since it is a Honda could likely be done for less than a grand. Chances of a VTEC valve causing an engine failure I would think are slim too.

Anyone else have thoughts/experience with this?

    It's not a Ducati...so dont worry.

If it ain't broke, dont fix it. I've heard of VFR VTEC motors reaching 70k + miles and not needing adjustment when they were checked.
