    Hey everyone,

I was curious if this happened to any of you. I have a 2003 VFR800 and I noticed that if the engine is cold that VTEC will not always kick in... as in it will just stay on 2 valves per cylinder.

Now I'm no knuckle head I don't rev a cold engine, but what I mean by cold is like coolant temperature will be at about 150 and usually at that point in time the VFR has been running for a solid 5 minutes. In my experience with other bikes that seems safe to redline after then.

I am worried there may be an issue with my VTEC or is this a normal safety function built in by honda? How long should I wait before using all my revs?

Somewhere in the owners manual it states the vtec valves are disabled until the engine warms up (but I don't think a specific temperature is mentioned). So what you describe is probably normal.

But if the vtec valves still won't operate when the bike is at normal operating temperature then you have a problem.

Oh okay, I'll have to find a pdf of the manual.

Vtec does operate properly when warmed up, I guess it just has to be warmer than I assumed.

VTEC is enabled once water temp is up in the neighborhood of 65'C or 149'F.

The owners manual does indeed specify a temp for VTEC operation. Just wait a bit longer - lol
