visual differences between 3rd and 4th gen engines ??

    I Googled it. The engine number should be in the format of RC36E-1xxxxxx or similar. Ignore the stuff prior to the "-" and all the digits after the 2nd one.

    As far as I could determine the first number after the "-" is the version number, the number after that is sequential for each year of production. So my understanding is that 1-4 would cover 90-93 (3rd gen) and then 5--8 would cover the 94-97 (4th gen).

    And you can trust everything you read on the Internet, right?

    The other difference from the service manual is in the location of ID numbers on the carbs, 3rd gen (VDJBA) and 4th gen (VP34A), where the 4th gen has the ID stamped just inboard of the throttle clamp but the 3rd gen looks to be on the opposite side of the carbs..
