How new? Can you control your speed in a group and resist the temptation to push the limits? Do you often ride hundreds of miles in a day? Is your bike in good shape with properly adjusted suspension and good tires? We don't go fast like some "group rides" and always wait for everyone in the group, but it is a spirited pace on winding back roads that culminates on a mountain pass that rivals the Dragon. We wear appropriate gear and don't go over 70. Most everyone has been riding for a few years and done a trackday or two. If you're a more of a 100 mile rider with some around town cruising you will not have fun. If you head to the best road you can find and ride all day you'll be good. Not trying to sound elitist, but we've been riding for a while, enjoy riding, and move with a purpose. Sometimes we have an alternate group who does the same route, but starts 15 minutes earlier or so. They take a more scenic pace. I'm big on safety and riding skillfully. People have shown up not prepared and sometimes their days have ended prematurely. Not that we push the limits by any means, but several factors added together like unfamiliar and challenging roads, fatigue, and the "group ride" effect (aka ego) can take over and end badly.
