Video VFR and close encounter with some deer

Hi all, went on a ride yesterday to test out my new hook up for my camera on the VFR for capturing some video. Second ride out there testing the mount for my SD900 on my GPS TechMount using a gorillapod I managed to get very close to two deer quickly crossing the road in front of me. It was a bit closer than the video shows. I caught the first deer out of the corner of my eye and started to slow when he hit the road. you can barely see the first one, but the second one is much more visible since I was moving slower. The deer show up about 1:30 into this 2 minute video, you really need to look close.

On the camera setup I think I need to get this back more to show the entire tach and the speedo. Do you guys agree?

Think it sounded good too , much better hearing the VFR's own great music playing than hiding it behind a soundtrack.

Go for a wide angle lens. many electrinics shops carry universal kits, I have one myself and it works great.

 

Absolutely I was very lucky. This has happened to me several times since I picked up the VFR and a few times in my distant past when I owned my V45 Magna. The incidents in in the past were down in Jersey in the Wharton State Forest. Right now I live in an area of Pa that is densely populated with deer. There are a few farms, just enough forest and a total lack of hunting due to the housing build up around here. Due to that the there are plenty of deer around. I have to be very careful when I head out there. I'm very lucky I saw the first deer cross when it was about 100 yards away, normally when there is one there are a few more. I got slowed down to miss the second one and there was a third that nearly came acorss the road from the right as well, but he turned around and ran back the other way. Yes very lucky.

Yes I do believe I need the wide angle attachment or a dedicated little video camera/recorder.

The pickup for the mic was just the standard Canon SD900 mic built into the camera and the whole contraption was mounted behind my Puig Touring screen so there wasn't too much wind noise. Believe it or not that is a dark smoke screen, but the camera still managed to pick up pretty well through it. If I'm going to do more of this shooting I think I need to put the clear Puig touring I have back on for the video sessions. I don't like the looks of it on the bike as the dark screen looks much better but the clear screen would proabably help on the cleaning up the video pickup.

 

I wish the roads were that smooth in my section of PA. Neat video. The can sounds good too!

 

Yes been to San Diego many times and you guys don't have to deal with those tightly wooded blind corners so much. I still love your weather for riding though. I ride year round, but this time of year I depend heavily on my Tour Master Heated gear....

 

I understand that deer are creatures of habit.
When I do see them, they're at the same spots along rte 82 in Delaware/Pa. all the time. I've learned to slow at those points, and sure enough they're there.

I saw one bugger crossing the road so I started to speed up. Just like that, the damn thing turned around and went back after he saw the head lights on the Viffer. we almost shook hands.
a couple of weeks ago, I rode around a nice silver bumper and blood trail strewn on the road.

82 is a sweet ride for sure. I used to live in South Jersey as well, and I also lived near Oxford in south eastern Pa so I used to take rides on 82 in my car just for fun.

As for deer being creatures of habit you are right on with that. Their is a field right near my house with road with a nice curve which cuts this field in half. The deer love the field so the curve nearly always has some deer on or around it. I take care riding through there every time.

I ride the road with the deer in the video many times, but this is the first time I saw deer on it. I will surely be alert when I ride it in the future!

 

Not right now, but I'll take some the next time I get it all hooked up. I really just attach the Canon SD990 to the gorillapod and wrap the gorrilapod legs around around my Garmin Zummo 550 Motorcycle mount which is attached to a Techmount GPS mount which slides into the stem hole in the triple clamp. Sounds complicated but it really isn't.

I'll take some shots next time I have it setup. It will probably be this weekend.

As for the rifle, maybe a set of fairing mounting guns might help out!

 

I just got this race optics camera mount, so far so good. Just plant it anywhere you want using the suction cup. The one con so far is the camera moving to the left or right, but that is probably just me doing it wrong.

 

I would either move the camera to show the tach or move it to where the tach isn't visible at all. Was the red glow visible the recording light on the front of the camera?

In my section of NJ, close encounters with deer are common place. Enfortunately for me, finding decent roads to ride on is at least a 45 minute ride from my home. 70% of the time, I head to Lambertville or New Hope & parallel the Delaware River.

The TBR on your bike sounds pretty similar to what mine did on my 00.
