I have a 1999 VFR Gen 5. Lately I've felt a vibration in the foot pegs. The bike only has 12k miles on it. I've ruled out tire balance. When I clutch it the vibration stops while still rolling down the road. I'm concerned it is something major in the power train. When a chain starts to go bad will it cause the vibration? I've had the bike only for about 6 weeks it had 7800 miles on it when I got it. So I'm not sure it the chain has every been changed. What is the life of a chain and sprockets. I do ride hard but I don't do burnouts or slipping the clutch when doing wheelies. I also do first gear roll on.

Would like some feed back on were to start and if any others have had other problems.

One last thing I did put a Power commander on last week. but the vibration was there before that and has not changed any after the install.

It's going in for Dyno and custom mapping in a week or so and would like to fix the vibration first.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

I'd say it's the chain.... Check the amount of movement at different points as you turn the wheel by hand, to see if there are tight spots(check halfway between the sprockets).
Also pull on the chain at the very rear(halfway around the rear sprocket), the chain should not move away from the sprocket base.

Since you say that it doesnt happen when you clutch it that will definitely rule out your tires and also points to something happening when pieces are under load.

Check your chain and feel for any tight spots and check your sprockets for broken teeth. I doubt the problem lies here but its worth a shot. I would check to see if you have a bearing going out as well.... see if there is any freeplay in the rear wheel by trying to move the rear wheel side to side while the rear wheel is in the air.

Is the vibration only when going down the road and the clutch is out or do you feel the vibration when sitting idle in neutral with the clutch out as well? That wouldpoint it towards a clutch/tranny issue but you don't see that too often.

I only feel the vibration going down the road under a load. The motor purr's like a kitty at idle. I don't feel any problems shifting or any problems threw the power band. The vibration is very noticeable at speeds of 90 to 125.

I will have time tomorrow to check the chain and bearings. I will post a update then. Thanks very much for the input.
