    Hi all
thanks in advance for any help.
i have a problem starting my VFR750FJ 1989 model. this only happens sometimes when cold i.e. overnight. after starting, it will restart even after being stood for 7/8 hours usually ridden in warm weather. when you press the start button it just clicks once abit like when the battery is flat and cannot sturn the starter. Battery ok. its a very loud noise and sounds mechanical.
a friend Honda delaer mechanic has said it could be the starter clutch or something about ithe pulse generator triggers on the clutch being incorrectly positioned and not lining up in the correct firing order?
i try to rock it back and forward in gear and after short while it starts. if i stop it straight away it turns over quickly and starts ok.
pls help. i know where the strater motor is and the starter clutch but what do i look for!!!!!
    pls help.
    thanks andyh

It does sound like the starter is hanging up, maybe has a flat spot on it and sometimes when you shut it off it stops in the one spot from time to time. I am not sure how to check it other than to replace it. But that could be a tad costly. I first woul dmake sure all the electircal connections to the starter, the relay, and the battery are tight and in good condition, meaning there is no corrosion or anything that might affect the curent to the starter or the relay.

Like Vinny said check all your connections if all looks good there is another avenue other that replacement. Pull the starter off & find a electric motor repair shop they should be able to test whether or not your starter motor armature has a dead spot. They should also be able to repair or rebuild the unit for about 1/2 the cost of new unit. I have seen some very inexpensive units available on ebay recently though as well. Good luck & make sure to post what the fix was, to help those that will read this in future.
