VFR750 wire in USB port

    Hello there,

    I wonder if you guys can help please, I have inherited this VFR750 from my dad since he has upgraded to a newer bike and while i've got it I want to give it a bit of an overhaul and improve it for a bit of touring. One of the first jobs i want to do is to add in a USB charger for my phone so I can use it as a sat nav. I have the mount and the charging head sorted, but my research suggests i want to add the USB 'charger into a switched live rather than just attaching it to the battery like the instructions show.

    I think i've found a good example- the brown wire in the photo is part of the harness which goes to the rear brake light, which seems to become active when the ignition is switched on, or will that only work when the brake is applied? Is there another reasonably easily accessible wire that people would suggest using for this?

    And then for the other wire, i assume this needs to go to earth which i think is the yellow and green wire, or should it go to the neutral? i've not done any other wiring projects before so any help would be appreciated.

    Ive seen a few suggestions on the site for off the shelf wiring kits, but they seem to be in the US and id rather avoid importing one if possible.

    Tail or licence plate wire will be live with ignition......... you'll need a ground wire...... I've only heard "neutral" as part of house wiring.... no neutral that I'm aware of on a 12V system.

    I also use brown wires for these applications, as it is usually a switched 12v. An eyelet on your USB unit ground wire under a bolt that goes into metal should be fine.

    For something close to the front of the bike, I will sometimes access a brown dash illumination wire. Also many Euro bikes have small running lights in the headlight, that would also be a great switched 12v source.

    Hi all,
    thanks for the advice, ive tried a couple of things at the back of the bike and neither worked, first i took the brown wire from the rear light, and connected the positive wire from the charger, then took the negative from the charger and connected it to the green wire from the rear light- didnt work, tried connecting it to the green and yellow wire- also didnt work. The wires i used were the ones shown here going to the rear light:

    Just to check i connected it directly to the battery and it worked. When i turn the ignition on, the rear light doesnt come on so i imagine this is the issue. Thanks for the further suggestion- i'll try the wires under the headlight, see if that works.
