    Hi
Just had the 1987 vfr700 Californian dyno'd.Not a lot of power, but more worrying is the fuel/air ratio. Its running pretty lean.. which ive been told can effect the power. I dont know what jets are in it yet, as I will be investigating over the weekend. I will be checking everything I can.Any ideas that you can suggest that I can do to improve things? The bike runs ok, it revs to the limit.Any suggestions please.
    Thanks
    Roger

Yikes! Something ain't right! According to those charts you are WAY to lean and losing a lot of HP as a result! I would get to the bottom of that before I did anymore riding...

Well than I am going to guess that their equipment is not operating right.....cause your AF is off the chart until 9K RPMs! How does the bike feel? Does it get really hot? You seem way down on HP and Torque. The only thing I can think of if the bike is running well is that their measuring equipment is on the fritz!

    I had it Dyno'd elsewhere.
I got the same hp figures but the air ratio was along the line.
That was 18 months ago though..
Wont hurt to strip and clean carbs.
The exhaust is non standard, so that may have some bearing.
I have a carb rebuild centre on my doorstep so it is easy for me to rebuild these if needed. Even in the UK.

Wacha need is to delete, cap, disconnect all the CA kit, then make sure standard main jets (#118/115 i think) are fitted and idle mixture screws set to about 2 1/2 turns out as a starting point.

Probably has weak CA cams too.

    Hi
Going to remove Ca crap when I pull the carbs off.
I didnt know the cams were different.
I am just going to connect the two cylinder head "breather" pipes together for now, but get some proper blanking plates made. I know I can just bend them over, but I have a Japanese spec 750 engine and carbs to go in over the winter.. if I cant sort it by then.
Thanks for the help so far

    Roger

How do you know if its a Ca motor?

Engine numbers for a start, and a load of extra pipework around carbs and fuel system. It down to the environment protection crap forcing the bike to have a closed fuel system.

I just checked the frame number on my bike and compared it to the table here Model History and Identification.
Looks like I have a CA bike as well. How can I find more info on how to remove all the CA specific stuff?

    Hi
    Right then.
This plug has been in since the last service 1000 miles ago.
Running on three cylinders for all the time I've had it. Never ridden another bike for years, let alone a vfr700, so no comparison.
No spark. Swapped coils, leads etc.. nothing.
Conclusion is the cdi unit is fubar'd.
Any one out there got one for an 87 f2?

It happens. I was surprized a few years back to learn that the CDI on my '86 700 could fail to fire on one cylinder only. I was thinkin that any failure would cut sparks to all plugs. WRONG !!

Did you manage to get it fixed?
Mine is not firing on number 3
Found a box in Holland but its €80 or $120 plus shipping.
    Can they be repaired?

I believe they can be repaired........but first you have to remove circuit board from the case without too much damage, not so easy.

In your case, you were screwed over by the guy who ran the dyno. As a pro, he definitely should have figured out that you weren't running on all cylinders.

I have ridden the bike for 3 years and I have not known it was only firing on 3 cylinders.
Had it upto 120mph, (I backed off) I have done 200 mile rides. I have even balanced the carbs, I couldnt tell..
Goes to show what a good engine they are.
