It could be a bad sidestand switch. When you put the sidestand down and the engine stops, is the bike in or out of gear? I have a problem with my sidestand light staying, but it is exhibiting no harmful side affects otherwise.

    check it out!!

quite possibly a failure of the starter system DIODE.

not sure where it's located on your bike.....read shop manual!

or try turning your bike upsidedown, so it works like our bikes here do................

I had a similar problem with my '00 model a while back.

A worn switch was found to be the culprit. I'll have a look to see if I can find the service docket.

    Found the receipt.

My bike occasionally wouldn't light the neutral light when it was in neutral. Never happened when the engine was cold, only once it had been running for a while.

The dealer found a switch was worn, it looked a bit like the top of a pen where you push down so that the business end comes out of the other end of the pen. (If that makes any sense.)

My receipt says that the part that needed to be replaced on my bike was a SW.ASSY.,NEUTRA! Part # 35600-KE8-003 Cost me AUD$19.90 for the part. My dealer gives me 10% off on parts, so it may be a bit dearer for you. And my bike is a 2000 model as well.
