1998 VFR. Bought the bike with a dead battery, PO said the Speedo and tach had been inop for about 10,000 miles. So...The speedo needle is parked at 170, never moves. The tach is at zero..never moves. The trip meter lights up and shows zero and the odometer is frozen at 29,438 miles. The bike had a recent RR replaced, so I was worried about the previous RR going overboard and frying the bike, but everything else on the bike works. Neutral, Oil psi, FI, temp gauge, and fuel level. After a battery charge and new plugs, the bike runs fine. All the lights work. ANY IDEAS?????

Check for spots of corrosion on the printed circuit on the back of the instrument cluster. It gave me intermittent then inoperative tacho...
The covering plastic film had lifted next to a screw, allowing moisture to form the 'green' corrosion on the copper strip, eventually breaking the circuit... some VERY careful scraping with scalpel, and delicate soldering of fine wire to bridge the corroded bit and 'bingo'... all good again

You need to pull it apart and inspect it for visual damage as previously stated, and do you have a good meter?

    Found the Problem

I pulled the unit apart and found burned diodes on both the speedo and the tach. Most likely from a previous RR problem? I ordered new speed and tach. Hope this fixes it. The circuit board looks fine.
