I've got a 2000 vfr 800 interceptor. I've seen temps high has 198 degrees. What temps do you all see when riding? Normal??? Might be going on a road trip and wanna make sure my bike runs correctly.
    TIA

When do you see 198? I've seen as high as 220 which is at idle on a hot 80-90* day. Running 45-70 mph I'm running 170-180. I just replaced a stuck thermostat and a faulty radiator cap.

I'm exactly at the same temp range as you, 68mustang.
Usually right at 175 at those speeds even on a hot day.
I might see 198 when it's on the way to climbing up to 220 during hot city traffic driving...

I always thought 220 was acceptably normal under those conditions (correct me if I'm wrong). Fan kicks on then.

My 8th gen averages about 180 when riding and climbs as high as 220 in traffic

Really there's not too much to worry about until 230, if it hits that and it's not 100*+ then something is wrong. And it should only hit that if it's sitting at idle.

Thanks guys. This is the first bike I've had that tells me the temp and fuel gauge. My dirt bikes never had em.. my 96 fzr 600 never had one or my honda vtx 1300 never had one. It's nice knowing the vfr has all that info. Was the 198 was sitting still at a stop light

Your radiator fan should come on around 221 degrees and cool the coolant down considerably. That's why the fan is there. You shouldn't have a problem unless your thermostat or fan isn't working correctly.

We really need an FAQ for these types of questions that come up so often. LOL

I am in Texas and it gets hot. My fan cuts on at 223 degrees and off at 209 degrees. Seeing fan cut on and off while idling happens all the time in town. Going on and off the highway for short periods, probably runs around 185, give or take. If I stay on highway for longer periods, it will cool down more than that. These bikes run hotter than many others.

I would love a database that we could enter these stats into. Maybe every new metric appears on our profile page and we just fill it in, then it flows to the stats page, populating curves and tables that we may view.

When the needy get going they whine instead of doing much of anything except being needy.

I will pray to Donald Trump for salivation.

Yea, just make this thread a sticky and call it good. A lot of good info in this thread.

    One thing to add:

As a general rule of thumb, if you're not cooling at idle or speeds less than about 25mph, then you don't have enough air flow.

    This can be due to:
    electric fan not working
    clogged radiators

If it's not cooling with speeds higher than 25mph it's usually due to a bad radiator cap, bad water pump, or clogged radiators.

Overheating at speed is usually not enough cooling capacity for one reason or another and overheating under 25mph is usually not enough airflow.

If that is how you see it. I see it as a robust reference that would last all of time, that all VFR owners moving forward would quickly find via Google, and which would provide quick answers. Also, these owners are metric crazy, posting peak HP, miles per gallon, tire choices, etc. This database would only be a reflection of the need that has always existed to record these things.

I believe the like to know is a reassurance thing by socializing. Some folks need that, others don't. I look at it as a no harm done by asking. What are forums for anyway LOL I use google all he time, but will occasionally ask here just to a make sure and see if there is any new spin. I mean everything on the inter-net is true right?
