Hi people, I'm new here and would like to ask something as I'm in high hopes of buying a VFR. I've ridden one (I think 98 model) but never owned one, really would like to have a VFR, still unsure which model to look up to. I try to make this question short and simple:

As far as I´ve read about this topic

    - after 98-99 models, the 00-01 ones got a cat, oxygen sensor and some kind of closed loop EFI system
    - 02-05 models of course differ quite drastically from the 98-01 models (VTEC), in which the transition happens at 6800rpm
    - 06-09 models have the valve transition lowered to 6400rpm

    - the 98 and 99 models get extra boost by adding a PowerCommander, slip-on & air filter and by opening the air intake
    - for the 00 and 01 models to get the same effects, at least the headers must be changed to similar as in 98-99 models
    - 02-09 version needs pretty similar mods to get more power

AND for the actual question, has anybody ridden BOTH 5th and 6th gen VFR:s that have been tuned up with most of those upgrades and what are your conclusions, is there a big difference in performance and in the way the engine behaves between them? When reading the reviews of 6th generation models it makes me think why people even ride them if 98-01 were superior to them? And by this I mean engine performance.

Thanks for any opinions on the topic, I really appreciate it!

or the super charger - which may be no longer available.

The Vfour can have her manners adjusted a little but there aren't gobs of hidden horses waiting to be freed. The best mod to a VFR is suspension. If you're worried about horsepower then you're looking at the wrong bike. But one of the fastest street riders I knew led litre bikes around the mountains on his 6gen.

Ding! Ding! Tink wins the prize.

I have a VFR and a CBR 954RR. I like both bikes for different reasons. I am nearly done with a suspension upgrade on the VFR and I can't wait. My riding style leans more towards the Sport side of sport/touring.

I have ridden both 5th and 6th gen bikes in stock form. I took the 5th gen over the 6th gen on the grounds of simplicity (no Vtec). However, I do like the way the 6th gen rides. I think it has a bit more power in stock form than the 5th gen and it has more sex appeal than the 5th gen in my opinion.

My 10 year old CBR makes the VFR look silly in terms of shear gunt. There really is no comparison. The VFR gives up about 35hp are the rear wheel while stacking on about 90 pounds compared to my CBR.

Having owned a 6th Gen and currently own a 5th I thought the 6th has a more interesting induction sound as and when the Vtec kicks in which was especially cool in a straight line. The 5th Gen with GDCs in my opinion sounds better at slow commuting speeds and without the Vtec step has a beautifully linear midrange which suits my riding style better in tight twisties. The '03 6th Gen needed a PC to get rid of the low speed jerkiness while my '99 has better fueling stock with only a carbon end can added.

Talking about a few HP here or there on a VFR is not that usful, if you want an older Sportstourer that goes "Woosh" then get a Superblackbird or if new look at the VFR1200 or a BMW K1300 like I rode recently *....
