My 1986 VFR700 has started leaking from the fuel petcock.

Is the Honda OEM petcock (16950-MB2-013) as good a replacement as any? Is there a better after-market unit available?

Partzilla has them in stock for $47 USD, according to https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/16950-MB2-013?ref=5300e1bf49254af707751707dd3697b09854aa9d

It's not dripping on floor. The engine case right below is wet with fuel.

For a 35 year old component, it seems reasonable to need replacing. Two previous owners back did about an 80% restoration. Guessing they didn't do the petcock, if it wasn't leaking.

or do I just need to source that groovy, triple o-ring seal?

I have just replaced the unit as a whole, you can find some pretty good deals on ebay for new Genuine Honda ones sometimes.

But I think there are some "kits" now that provide the "groovy" o-ring and you tap the holes for screws after drilling the rivets.

if you're lucky sometimes the seal can be turned back-to-front and work again.

If I was drilling out rivets, I'd be putting a new seal in.
