thx for the reply and the link. I have the title and ur link confirms the frame at least is a 1984. The engine #does not match the title so that is why I am asking here. Are there any obvious exterior differences to the engine to help?

If you know someone at a Honda shop that still has micro-fiche cards, they should be able to tell you.

Most Honda Engine Serial Numbers do not match the Frame/VIN. However, Honda does list in the microfiche which engines were produced in which years for which frames. Unless you have a non california VIN, but a California carb setup, or vice-versa, I would not worry about it.

Great Topic, A Honda dealer should have a Honda Model ID book. actionps.com has a fiche on their site.

I was hoping for this. I really don't care if anything matches or is proper, but just want this thing to run. Another reason for wondering about what year the engine came from is because there is a fuel pump issue per the previous owner and I see the wiring is spliced and the pump is dangling. Are the wiring harnesses or "looms" the same for all three years?

I couldn't find the engine information needed on the actionps site. Looks like a trip to the dealer is in order. Hopefully the pimple faced kid behind the counter won't say; "whats a fish?" when I ask for a fiche.
