I've got a motor that I'm working on putting back together and I'd like to put all new cam chain guides in while it's apart. As it sits the heads, oil pan, starter clutch, clutch, oil pump, water pump and flywheel are all off. I was able to get the front head guide (Guide B) off easily enough but I'm having trouble with the rear head guide (Guide A). I can see how to get to the bolts but the holder assembly for the tensioner guides is in the way. The holder mounts to the lower case half from the top and is bolted from the bottom. If I can get the holder out of the way I can easily get Guide A out. Unfortunately the only way I can see to extract the holder is to split the block. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the holder or otherwise remove the guide without splitting the block? -Jake
Okay, since no one knows...the trick is to use a wobbly head socket (socket with a U-joint built in), 1.5" extension, a second U-joint, 10"+ extension and ratchet, all 1/4" drive. Unbolt the tensioner holder to give yourself some extra room. Go from the bottom of the motor in front of the crank. Getting the bolts out was easy but it took some patience and long fingers to get the rear-most bolt back in. -Jake
