Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum, thanks for having such a great community, looks like lots of info & knowledgeable people here, which brings me to my question. I just bought a 1986 VF500F & was looking to remove the rear signal lights & change out the brake light to one that has the signals built in. I have seen this on newer bikes, does such a kit exist?

Also, I have not looked yet, but is there an easy way to drain the fuel? This bike has been sitting in a garage for 10 years, it has 24k & in good shape, but requires some minor work. Before running it I need to drain the old fuel, change the coolant & oil & most likely replace the brake fluid. I also have 2 new tires & a new battery & then hopefully should be good to go.

Any advice or suggestions would be great!

    Thanks

I'm afraid that Matt is right about the aftermarket status for our bike. It is pretty much non-existent. It is tough enough as it is to find OEM parts.

As far as draining the tank, I use a kerosene siphon to drain the tank before I store it in the basement each winter. I can have the tank drained in less than 5 minutes.

You've got a great bike. Post some pictures when you can. Welcome to the forum.

    tire size changing

Thanks for the info, I can live without the extras, it's a nice looking bike the way it is...I actually pick it up today in about 6 hours, then it will be home in my garage so I can get started. I have one of those flo n go hand held gas pumps. Maybe I'll try that in the tank and see how it works. Does anybody know if the rad has a drain plug or do you have to disconnect a hose? I figured that since it's been sitting for 10 years I should replace the plugs as well. Was going to use NGK iridium, anyone using those? Also, for tires I was going to order Pirelli Sport Demon, anyone using those? And for my last question, I was going to have the new tires slightly larger, but not large enough to have to do any mods. Was going to change the front from a 100/90H16 to a 120/80-16. Tire shop here says it will work fine but may have to notch the fender mount holes. They also say I can change the rear from 110/90H18 to a 120/90-18 without changing anything...anyone have any advice on this?

Lumpy: Welcome to the forum. That "babyceptor" will definitely need a carb soak and clean. Better get a shop manual. Leave all four connected to each other or you'll be in a lot of trouble. Pull the bowls and shoot carb cleaner in the holes with compressed air. Be gentle but repeat it often. Don't mess with the pilot screws, or mixture. Unless you have a lot of goop in them, then you'll have to count the turns till they stop and mark it on a paper for reassembly. As far as the rear stop signal setup you mentioned, I've never heard of a rig like that. I kept my 500 stock except for the replacement drilled disks and steel brake/clutch lines. I figure as long as it's in good shape, why modify it?
I'm running Pirelli Sport Demons on mine and I like them. I went stock size but you should be able to get away with the larger rear. Keep the front stock, that small tire up front is one reason it handles so well and carves into those turns.
Have fun with it. They are an awesome bike with that little V4.

I like the stock Signals on the bike...they stick out and let people know that you wanna turn.

Some of these new flush mounts are impossible to see during the day.

I installed an HID headlight and just threw in some bright LED towers into the stock signal housings to make them look brighter and more modern.
