Thought it might be helpful to type up a list of 4-2 and 4-1 aftermarket systems that were made back in the day for the mighty VF500F and VF500F2 (a shout out to Noël).

    So far I have noted*

Hindle 4-1, requires a modification to stock chin cowling (a slot cut into the right side)
Kerker 4-2, paired with cylinders 1|3 and 2|4 *considered the best pairing for 4-2 systems*
    Mac 4-2
SuperTrapp ? 4-2, equal length system (staggered mufflers)
Vance & Hines 4-2, paired with cylinders 1|2 and 3|4
Yoshimura 4-1 (Japan only) and 4-2, paired with cylinders 1|3 and 2|4 *considered the best pairing for 4-2 systems*

*revised per additional information based on new posts

From what I have read the Yoshimura and Hindle require the removal of the centerstand. The V&H does not (it does require an easily fabricated stop for the centerstand) .

Also, the Yosh system looks to have been designed for the shallower '84/'85 oil pan - not sure about the Hindle or the V&H, or if versions of the Yosh, Hindle and V&H were made specifically for the '86.

Please feel free to comment and/or add to the list. Once complete, I'll compile these and make a reference file for other owners who have an interest in this upgrade.

    Thx!

Thank you for the note. I'll make the change.

If anyone has photos of these exhaust systems installed please feel free to post here.

To keep the format consistent - a photo of the overall side elevation + details at the chin cowl, the oil pan and any mounting connections would be most appreciated.

    Thx!

I have the Hindle on mine. I can confirm you lose the centerstand (I was racing so it was already gone). I had to trim the chin cowling slightly to allow clearance for the right side downpipe. I'm several thousand miles from home until late June sometime, I'll get some pictures then.

Actually if you look at my avatar picture you can see how it looks.

    Great intel. Thx!

I did make note on one photo that I had seen of a VF500F - that has a Hindle - that the chin cowling was modified, as you have described. A detail photo of this would be great to have, when you are back from your trip.

Also, do you remember what the clearance is between the exhaust pipes and the oil pan (I am assuming you have the stock '85 oil pan on your bike)?

I have a yoshi 4 to 2, and the centerstand does not need to be removed in install/remove it. I also have another one in a box back home I'll have to check on. I think it deletes the collector box, I'll post more tomorrow.

I have noticed that the chin fairing needs to be cut a bit for these systems.

Not sure if it's with all of 'em.

Thank you for the post. Good info on the centerstand. Does the chin fairing need to be modified for the Yoshimura exhaust pipes?

The 4-2 and 4-1 systems remove the stock collector box. From what I've read the VF500F prefers the 4-2 systems over the 4-1 systems. I'd like to get some more feedback on this though - from VF500F owners that have/or have had these systems installed.

Yes, it looks like the Hindle 4-1 requires this modification.

More intel on the Yoshimura 4-2 (mounted on an '85 VF500F)

Thanks to BillSF9c from the Yahoo VF500F Owners Group.

From the photos you can see that the pipes run under the oil pan and that they don't have very much clearance. I don't think the deeper '86 oil pan would work with this system.

Having tried to mount an 85 oil pan to my 86 I can say that you are most likely correct.

What exhaust system are you running - did you need to switch to the shallower '84/'85 pan and smaller oil pump because of an exhaust pipe clearance issue?

I read through your thread on the oil pan. The gremlin, that you have been wrestling with, seems to have taken up residence way back in July of '09. Perhaps you could park your bike next to a cruiser that has a lot of shiny chrome. Said gremlin just might, if you are lucky, make a jump - lured by its own reflection in all, that, shiny, chrome.

^^ Hahaha....I think it started happening when I started messing with the rear wheel but that's not for this thread ;-)

    Thank you for the post.

If you have a digital camera, a few photos: an overall side elevation, detail at the oil pan/chin cowling and details of mounting points would be much appreciated. Also, please note the model year of the bike when posting the photos. Thx!

A few photos of a Hindle 4-1 installed on an '85 VF500F (researched from the web)

*Additional note - this header was not installed correctly. The exhaust's mounting points were not bolted to the oil pan.

    No centerstand.

It looks like the chin cowl (the bottom of the cowl) has been modified to allow for the clearance for exhaust pipes..?
