Hey hope some one can help me with this problem i was riding me bike(vf500) an noticed that it seemed a little hard to shift didnt pay much attention to that because i had been recently riding my dirt bike and that has an easy shift. i thought i was just not used to it. then after some spirited riding i all of a sudden it lost power almost like i was running out of gas but it wasnt chuging just no power so i pulled over thinking mabye the fuel pump quit or something that seemed to be fine. i tried to rev it up and seemd to only make it up to 4000 rpm then boggy i turned it off started it up agian and it seemed to run fine reved up to redline no problem. i put it in gear and it ran like the rear brake was on no power(brake was not stuck) made it home at about 30mph then tured off started it up and it seemed to rev up fine agian but havent put it in gear and tried dont want to weck it more then i have any help would be great thanks.

I'm going to speculate that it being in gear is only a coincidence and not a true symptom. Sounds like a fuel system problem like something sucked up on the fuel pickup screen. The engine will rev up to redline extreamly easily without a load on it. Put a load on it (like trying to drive) and any problems with the fuel system will show up immediately.

Just my opinion. Maybe a veteran around here has a better suggestion.

Yeah, I'd say it sounds like carbs for sure. Pulling the plugs would tell you if it's just one cylinder. If you had something go wrong with just one carb it would still run but really down on power - just like you describe. I'd pay particular attention to the vacuum slides.

AND check your tank for RUST using a flashlight.......not a match or candle.

A rusty tank will clog carbs and cause the problem you describe.....ask Matt.
