Since last week was beautiful out in Indiana, I put the ole vf750 back together from a winter of cleaning, valve adjustment, and other various new parts.. and rode it to work. She looked beautiful and sounded even better

    886552_506585919399637_1059327064_o.jpg 65295_506585892732973_1709176156_n.jpg 575744_506585846066311_1799584807_n.jpg

As I went on the 35 min ride to work, I noticed a very slight tick/clack sound and figured that I would put it off until my next day off and then I'd check out what it was (being that it was rather quiet, I wasn't too worried). On my way home, it was a bit louder, so I parked it and adjusted the valves (along with installed a new starter clutch since mine was slipping and needed done while I had my crankcase covers off). Started it up, everything seemed to be a bit quieter (though still a slight tick), so I went on a test ride to see if the tick worsened with rpm's/riding or stayed the same. Soon, it became a knock more of a tick and I parked the bike yet again. Valve covers came back off, as well as crankcase covers and spark plugs came out. Valves were all good, (I was afraid I had dropped a valve or broken a spring). No bent rockers, cams still looked good.... I just scratched my head and since I had to leave for my night job, I put it off yet again.

Well, that was last week and today I got around to digging further, just to find out that the right rear piston is slapping on the top and bottom of it's stroke.. No bueno. I figure either connecting rod, or wrist pin is the cluprit.. So, when I get yet another day off (in a week or so), I'll be dropping the engine and in the mean time, I have a question.

Does anyone have a vf1000f/r engine that they wouldn't mind parting with?

I can't find anything on ebay besides the block and every part individualized (so I keep thinking of possibly building one from the bottom up), but I would much rather buy one in one piece. I have cbr wheels, some misc exhaust parts, and a vf1000 front end that are waiting on this bike to get up and going again lol. Shoot me a price if you have one, (if you have a whole parts bike, even better. I guess a parts engine will suffice as well, as long as it hasn't been stripped of anything essential like the crank or something similar...

*on a side note, if anyone has a 750, I would be interested in that as well. I just need something to swap in so I can work on mine and still ride while it's nice outside. And I've been drooling over 1000's since I knew what a vf was, so 1k is preferred :)

You sure one of the rear cams is not out of phase? Easy to do if the tensioner is bad. Could be just enough to let the piston and valve bump. Forget the "R" engine it is not a direct fit in to your frame. You need to alter the rightside upper frame cause the head will lay against it. You need to get a "F" engine but forget that too. I've been looking for a "F" engine for over two years. I been doing searches of CL for the states and ebay about once a week. No such deals so far. There are 2 85/86 R's for parts in Philly if you want to try it. There are a couple of other R's for sale (2 nice,1 eh) and a mint F for $3500.

There is a topic on this site someplace about a guy altering the frame of a F to fit a R engine in it. I really hate those ebay guys that take a good F or R engine and part it out. Seems like such a waste to ruin a good rare motor.

1st: Would the cam being out of phase cause only one cylinder to bump at both top & bottom of the stroke? & my cam chain is some how tight after 35k miles..

2nd: What do you suggest I do then? There aren't any decent looking 750f engines online (one crappy one on ebay and it's pickup only in Virginia)

3rd: I MIGHT have found a vf1000 engine through a motorcycle salvage place.. waiting on a confirmation atm.

and last, but not least.. if I were to get a vf1000r frame and engine w/carbs, would anything off of a 750 be interchangeable? I have a ton of 750 spare parts and that would be sweet lol

Make sure that VF1000 engine is either a F or R. Some places make the mistake that Saber/Magna motors are the same and they are not. There is/was a R frame on ebay for sale for a long time. Your better off buying a trashed 750 w/good motor. Not many parts interchange between the F and R bikes. So there's really no help there. I think the swing arms, sprockets, brakes will interchange. Though the calipers on the R I think have larger pucks. Stuff like that. Basic electronics like flashers, relays, not ignition, bar switches etc.

The F bikes are really close to each other. 750/1000 have a lot more in common because the 1000 is just a biker version of the 750. The R was built different because it was for their racing program to keep their WSB legal for racing. It had to be based on a production bike.

Yeah, so I found an R engine for 500 bucks.. but I don't have a welder at my disposal anymore, so no frame modifications for this guy. Oh, and so far, no 1000f's. Just that one R and a few parts R's.. So that's a dead end.

On the other hand, I got a hold of Dave Dodge and he said that he can bore it +1 o/s, so I may just send him my cylinders along with cams and get a whole top end made. It's a bit on the costly side, but this bike is like a child to me haha. I bought her for 100 bucks and have been restoring/modifying her since 2008 (that and I just can't seem to fall for the high pitched scream of the newer bikes)

How much modification is needed for the F or R to fit then? I've found on thread where a guy put a 1kF into a vf700 frame, but he didn't seem to have too many problems... & after reading that about drp, I'm not too keen on sending parts/ordering cams or having him redo my valves for me..

Does anybody know of a reputable motorcycle shop in the US that has experience with v4's? I've done some searches on here, and to be honest it doesn't come up with too many results (with the exception of drp)

The big F is easier than the R. The F will go without frame modification because it's heads are narrower than the R's(the cam gear drive takes up more room than the chain). If you want to transplant a 1000, the F will give you a lot less headaches. I have an F motor in pieces. I repaired a 2nd gear problem but never got around to putting it back together. Looks like I should get cracking...apparently there's a need out there.

I have a V4 Engine tuner, and all round good egg, Mike Switzer owner of SuperTune of Colorado Home | SuperTune. He is an old school racer tuner from the 80's and 90's. He raced and tuned VFR's in the day, and has a full on machine shop. I knew him personally as a friend, before he started his shop, and will vouch for him and his shop.

Good to know, I like having options. Still on the hunt for an engine though. I'm waiting till this weekend to finally drop mine out of the frame, but in the mean time, I'd like to have something so I can still ride. (50 miles a day with a v8 is raping me on gas mileage)..

So for anyone who has posted on here or is just reading this, back to the initial Q. Any engines to be parted with?

I've been looking for another VF1000 engine for about three years now. They are pretty hard to find these days.

Yeah, I think this guy is hoarding them all... Honda VF1000F Motorcyle | eBay 3 spare engines!

I keep contemplating taking off of work and going on a cross country drive to get that bike, just for the spare engines... but I really don't need another toy or project right now.
