Just another bike? I USED to think so.
I bought my '86 VF500 last December as a salvage bike, for the intention of repairing and reselling. Put some time, effort and a little bit of money to replace the front end with VF700 fork uppers and internals into VF500 fork lowers, new tappered steering bearings, new clutch and the CBR600F2 rear suspension upgrade. Finally finshed with all the paint, clear coats and OE decals and took it for its first ride last night. A slow 2nd gear cautious ride through the neighborhood, since it sustained a hard enough front impact to bend the original front forks back towards the engine and crush the headlight assembly. Wasnt sure if the triples or frame was bent. Took my hands off the bars and it went straight. It did not tug to either side when accellerating or braking.
It is sooooo smooth. It just hums quietly. Are V4s supposed to sound different from a I4? I might not have to synchro the carbs after all. It is almost too bad that I am going to be selling it. It is getting late in the MC season, so I may have to enjoy it until next spring.
And here, I thought the VF and VFR were just another sport bike. I am thoughly impressed with this bike and now understand why your folks are here.

Yes, the V4's have a distinctive sound from inline 4's and twins....that is "part" of the many reasons that we love them. Inline 4's are great, but I grew tired of them over the years, and wanted something different....a twin or a v-4 were my options.

The difference is like that of a 4 banger or a V8 muscle car

Yep they're suppose to sound different. That and have a different way of making power ala reason behind the V4, but whats interesting here is, back in the day the VFs had a 360 degree crankshaft which actually made it a Vtwin of sorts which made it have a different sound yet. When one gets the chance listen to any VF then listen to a 3rd gen or newer. Honda changed the VFR to a 180 degree firing to help in the sound department as there was a lot of "that sounds funny" coming from customers that didn't know what was going on. Interesting again is the Rc30-45 have a 360 degree crank firing too.
