valve stem replacement

During the transport of my bike, I hit the rear tire valve stem pretty hard and cracked it, Now if you move it a little it leaks. Has anyone replaced one without taking the tire off?

I was thinking I can let the air out, break 1 bead, press the tire in a little to get the old valve out, and put ( pull the new one in ) use my compressor to fill back up the tire and "pop" the bead back on using air pressure. All without rotating the tire so everything stays ballanced.

am I way off base?

 

That's the way I would do it. I've used a large C-clamp and to pop the bead off (use it in a few spots), use a towel to keep from scratching the rim. Shouldn't be any problems.

 

I have promised myself that the next time my tires are off the rim I am going to put 90 degree valve stems on.

That has to be a nice improvement over the stock setup.
