Do the VFRs require valve checks at any intervals or are there hydraulic lifters on these bikes.

I am trying to get a general idea of what the regular maintenance on these bikes is, outside of oil and brake pad changing, chain tensioning. I am fairly mechanically inclined. Is the maintenance on these bikes something that can be done by me?

I know the Honda manuals say check at 16k, 32k,48k etc. Well the last time I did it was on my 4th gen and I just checked the valve clearance. I was late in checking at 22k miles but all the clearances were only .001" off the spot on spec and still in tolerance. I havent had to do the shim and bucket thing yet, I'll worry about that when I get there.
Generally the worst thing is stripping the bike down enuff so you can get at all the stuff. After that its strait forward mechanics.

I have a 5th gen now with about 11k miles and I plan to go to about 20k before I even plan to check clearances. I have heard people in this forum go even farther.
Hey gang - whats the record?

VFR = ultimate low maintenence ride.

BTW if you are a general gearhead, you shouldnt have any problems working on your viffer.

Thanks for the input, I have had many problems in the past 4 years with poor quality suzuki mechanics and have learned to do it all myself w/o paying someone $90/hr to screw it up. I am getting ready to sell my suzuki and move up to a VFR and dont want to be in the shop for service all the time. i am super stoked to get this all done and find that right viffer for me.

Hey SSurfer4; To answer your question about hydraulic lifters and the VFR, to the best of my knowledge the VFR engine is an overhead cam type of powerplant. One of the advantages of an OHC motor is that the valves are actuated directly off the camshaft. Therefore it dosent have any lifters ,hydraulic or solid, nor does it have pushrods.Today, very few metric bikes are manufactured with pushrods and valve lifters. However all the rules change when talking about Harley Davidson motors, these bikes, even the new twin cam motors have the older style valve trains including hyd. lifters and pushrods. eddie

    6 gen

I think the valve adj. is due at 15K. I am a mechanic by trade both car and motorcycle . after reading the procedure I will take it to the dealer because I would charge more than the dealer would and there are spescal tools required.or I will sell it before it reaches that point

Um, VTEC... Whoa! While I might debate whether to attack the VTEC valves, I think I might just let some poor dealer mechanic tackle that job. Thats one job that really sucks!

2 points for my 5th gen.
