How much does the valve adjustment run on the V-Tech in your area? How many miles before you need an adjustment? Is the chain driven cams an issue verses the gear driven?

around 500-600 the manual says at 16k ....not sure what the timing chain or gear cam would have to do with the valve adjustment still need to degree them both but thats it price is high but i would say if you aren't riding hard and just riding normal it could go 20k...i've had bikes say every 5k and tolerances weren't out at all...

$600-700 for VTEC valve check... it's definitely spendy. but it's not something i would do myself... and on a mechanical ability 10 scale, i'm a 7-8. others will disagree. i guess if you have lots of time and tools, and skill, go for it. As far as miles, 20K plus shouldn't be a problem... every single poster who did it at 16k says it was in spec. mine was. but i had other issues so while i was in there, had it done.

If you don't hear it clicking, and it runs good leave it alone..... the same goes with any valves. Clicking sounds load then adjust.I put 100k on my '99 had it checked 3 times only needed one valve(out of 16)and that one wasn't off that much.... The way these valves adjust is that there is a metal disc that is inserted (these disc come in a lot of different thicknesses)to hold the right amount of adjustment. Unlike many valves that are adjusted with a rod that is turned and locked with a lock nut(that can lose its setting rather quickly(6000 miles).....

FYI the non-VTEC valves use the tiny disc (<$10), but if a VTEC valve clearance is out of spec you need to replace the whole lifter for that valve (~$40). I don't expect many dealers carry a full assortment of those lifters, so if one needs replaced it could be a few days wait.

I did my own valve check on my bike... but it's an Inline 4.

I opted to just did the check and buttoned it back up.... getting an 09 motor with 6k miles with throttle bodies for 700 dollars. Can't beat that!

I had 10 valves WAY out of spec. My motor also has a small problem weeping oil all along the crank case halves that I sealed from the outside with RTV, which has worked fine thus far but makes me paranoid. I figure for the effort to drop the motor, crack the case, scrap old gasket, new gasket/silicone, wait, reinstall AND 10 valves that I would need to buy shims for etc. I might as well just do a new motor since it's so cheap and have a new clutch and reset the maintenance interval.

The valve check is an easy but time consuming process. taking off the tensioner(s), cams etc. to do an adjustment is what's hard.

At least it's only every 26k miles.
