Just wondering if anyone knows how many hours the dealership will charge to do a valve inspect/adjust on a 2003 VFR800? Just looking for hours, not dollar figures.

    Thanks,
    -John

This may not help but was told some time ago it's about 8 hrs at $800.
Sounds about right $100 an hr---
Took mine in, told the ex HRC mechanic what I wanted-- he responded how's it running? Said great, he then said any unusual noises, I said nope--- he came back with DONT waste your money but I'll take if you want.
Have 41691 on my 02 and still running strong
    Told ya I wouldn't help

My shop charged me 5 hours labor to check and another 2 to adjust. No adjustment was necessary.

.EDIT - the 2 hour estimate to adjust was just that - an estimate. The valves were perfect and needed no adjustment.

Also talked to another mechanic that has done around 12 and not one needed adjustments.
I definitely was on the fence should I just do it anyways to be on the cautious side, decided for the dyno instead--- a lot cheaper.

I just had mine done. 2007 with 43,000 on the clock. I had one of the local performance shops knock it out. I removed all the plastics that could get in the way before I rode it over. They actually appreciated that. It took 5 hours and all where in in spec. Granted, a few where on the lower side of "in spec", but spec none the less. Total cost out the door was $400ish.

I have 73,000+ on my 5th gen. I'll be sure to strip the plastics when I get it done, soon.

    UPDATE:

Just got the call that the bike is done. Technician said he had 10hrs into it, but they are charging me 7.5hrs. Total came to $980 with parts(replaced spark plugs since they were right there). 1 valve shim needed replacement as the technician said it had some pitting. Of course there were valve cover gaskets that were replaced as well. Oh well, it should be good to go now.

Anyone consider just checking/adjusting the non-vtec valve clearances? I've done the previous gen non-vtec vfr many times and its pretty easy. I'm thinking that the non-vtec valves get used way more than the vtec thus more potential wear. Just doing the non-vtec would not involve all the extra steps needed for vtec check and adjust. I've got a low mileage 07 and am thinking when about 25000 miles rolls around i wll just check the non-vtec valves.

Anyone ever heard of damage done to a VFR engine for valves being out of tolerance due to missing valve checks per the manual, at any mileage? I haven't in many years of owning VFR's. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened, I've just never heard of an example.

I think your logic on this is pretty sound; the VTEC valves won't see nearly as much action as the others.

I watched a VTEC valve adjust on Youtube and the mechanic made short pins from a bolt to lock the VTEC buckets in their engaged position so he could check them. Bigger deal is that you need to replace the whole bucket to adjust the clearance if needed. And of course you need to pull the cams to get the buckets to fit the pins, then refit the cams to check clearance, then remove the cams to remove the pins.
