Took my chopper for a 65 mile ride to the DMV.
The gearing is way too low. I could only cruise at about 50 max.
17 T front and 45T tooth rear. no good.

It was threatening to rain on the way and that made me nervous. no front fender and all.

But I made it to the DMV inspection, Inspector was OK . He was friendly to me. All that is left now is to go for my CHP inspection and VIN number.
Did not over heat . no other problems. Handlebars got a little loose. Thats was it.

I will fix the sprocket first.
Also I took the carbs off and reset all the floats to .350 instead of .300 as shown in the VF1000R Honda workshop manual.

Does anyone have a workshop manual for the vf1100 Honda V65?

I would like to know what float level is recommended. and Main jets.

This week I will be getting a kit to add an oxygen sensor and fuel/air ratio monitor to help me get the carbs really dialed in.

Wish I knew what the numbers on the slide needles mean. It is NOT in the workshop manual.
One set of carbs I have has the number stamped on the needle it is - 1 H A
Another set of carbs I have is numbered- 1H E

I am going to try to measure the taper on them.
Let me know if you know anything about those needles.

I have that one! Sadly, back at my shop. Working a 12 hour midnight shift at the county bed & breakfast for the next 2 days. If no one can help you out I will be back in my shop friday am.

    Thanks a lot.
That information is in the beginning of the carb section.

..and most of the rest of us.

There will be some disagreement directed toward the above. Please leave a name and number and we will get back to you with many many questions and if fate is any indicator, a whole shitload of "gimme a freebie" requests.

It would go much faster but seemed really high revved. I was trying to find its cruise mode.
Maybe it does not have a cruise mode.
I will ride it again today and make sure it is shifting into all the gears.

Bottom line? It was a compliment supporting BZ's premise with a little satire tossed in.

I'm waiting for the peanut gallery aka the sidewalk superintendents to start telling you how you should have built your bike and what they don't like about your bike and how if it was their bike it would be much different. They fucking wish..

Honda shop manual for the R lists 125 mains f&r for the 49-state model. The CA bike had 122 f and 120 rear mains. I believe the pilot jets were all #38.

Float level is .35in (9mm) per the manual.

I listed the dia. of my rear tire around 25". What is your dia? Are you saying it is 50mph max speed?

My rear wheel is very close to what yours is.

I am getting a 37 tooth rear sprocket, and that will give me 66mph. Low revs.
17/45=2.64:1 then 17/37=2.17:1 Or 66.89 mph At 3,000 rpm? That gives plenty of room to stretch out.
I got that sprocket at KOSMANS Specialties.

Oh and thanks for that info.
i reset my floats to .350 instead of .300

I rode it again today with quieter exhausts same style though. The comfort speed was high gear and about 55 mph.
Not quite good enough on California freeways. You will get mowed down by old lady's in Big Cadillac Escalades.
So I am getting a 37 tooth sprocket tomorrow and that will put my comfort cruising speed at 66.8 mph with plenty of room to accelerate if needed.

I am installing that air/fuel ratio monitor tomorrow too. I have to weld in an oxygen sensor bung into the header.

Just wondering, you say 55mph, at what rpm was that? The motor is made to rev to 11K, cruise at 5K in 5th around 65mph. I'd really be interested to see what the a/f monitor says, you are running just 2 carbs, correct? I'm curious to see if it's starved for air/fuel.

To clarify, your original post says 50mph >max<, now 55mph. That sounds to me like it's a/f starved??

That is the stock style carbs. Wide open throttle works fine. And I have a #40 idl jet which works perfect.
If I pull the choke out a little while riding it runs much better. It is just the mid range now I am trying to get right.
That air fuel ratio monitor should nail it down .
So I changed the mufflers to the same style muffler but they are stock HD Dyna mufflers and they are more restrictive and it runs much better.

Today I test rode with the 37 Tooth rear sprocket and 17 front sprocket.
    Now it is much better!!

Low revs at 65 mph and plenty of headroom. AND...And First gear is not too high - still very usable.

It probably should have been 40 teeth from the time it left the factory. I think the 45 tooth was made for track racing intentions. Not for freeways.
