I currently ride a 2000 Suzuki SV 650 (30,000 miles) and have been eyeing a VFR as my next bike. I am a huge fan of V engines and Honda's V-4 intrigues me plus the fact the VFR's are great looking bikes. My riding style is to make a beeline to the mountains on weekends and ride absolutely as hard as possible thru the twists and turns for about 400 miles until I am exhausted. I occassionally track at Talladega, Birmingham and Road Atlanta but my love is screaming thru the East Tennessee\North Georgia\Western Carolina mountains. So here I am to study up on the different VFR generations, the what-to-look-fors and everything\anything I should know about these bikes before I go galuphing off to buy one. Please feel free to point me towards any threads someone like myself should study as a basis of introduction to the VFR and I encourage any of you to throw whatever info you please my way. Good to have found you guys. Thanks Jay
Welcome aboard! I have a 6th Gen and a 3rd Gen and I would highly recommend an early model 5th Gen for you (98-99.) It combines the best of all generations including: Fuel Injection, Linked Braking, Catless exhaust, gear driven cams, and no VTEC engine. One thing to keep in mind is that all VFR's prior to 2006 had electrical gremlins of sorts that might require minor fixes if not already done (new R/R and new wiring harness.) VFR's are welll built bikes and when maintained properly have a long engine life so don't be afraid to pull the trigger on an older model if you get a smoking deal. You will get a range of opinions on the VTEC engines in the 2002+ models and it seems most people either love it or hate it. I personally don't care for the VTEC but love the looks of the 6th Gen along with the wide range of luggage options available for it. Rollin
Hey welcome to the site.. nice looking suzuki you got there! I have a 02 VFR and am happy with it. The Vtec dosent bother me. I kinda like it. Saw your from Chattanooga. I have family not far from you in Dayton. I cannot wait to go visit them this summer so I can go tear up the mountin roads out there.
Welcome, Jay. I'm not too far down the road from you - Huntsville, AL. Decent riding around here, but not like you have. You're much closer to some great mountain roads. I ride a 4th Gen VFR ('97), the last year before Honda made some significant mod's. I love it. Runs strong. Never given me a day of trouble in about 20K miles of ownership. About 35K on the clock now. As someone already mentioned, don't be afraid of older models. If they were well taken care of, you can get a great bike for not too much $.
