Can I use ATF as fork oil in my Gen 3 or is it too thin?

And heres something I found on a Gixxer forum...thanks Zaxxos!

would like to thank all for the advice so far.
But that is not my question.
Despite if I am "normal" or "talented" (REDNECKRIDER) or why I want to change it has nothing to do with it.

Has anyone tried it? And if so, what do you guys think?

It has the same qualities as a 10w and it is a lot better than fork oil regarding heat and it ability to maintain the same viscosity. Not to mention that many bikes come from the factory with ATF in the forks.
It is even listed on many charts among fork oils. A lot of people use Amsoil or Mobil 1 which as you can see on the following graph it is somewhere between the Suzuki and Honda 10w fork oils.

confused here, why not use fork oil as fork oil. A quart of BelRay (more than enough for both forks) is $16. Given the brands on the market you can get 5, 7.5 10 12.5 15 and 20wt... seems a false economy for a problem that really doesnt exist.

ATF used to be the norm for damper-rod style forks (non-cartridge). I used it on all of my old bikes with no problems except for using the "F" style one time by accident; it made the seals leak. Immediately switching to the non-F (GM?) took care of it.

Since I know absolutely nothing about fork oil (or ATF) with regard to fluid properties, etc., all I can add is what I stated above.

Although I don't like the price of fork oil, I do like being able to experiment with different viscosities.
