    Those crazy plastic trim clips that I've only seen on the VFR. Is there any reason why I couldn't use the common ones that have the round pin in the middle?

    None whatsoever. The originals suck. If you want the screw type (1/4 turn to release), look up the ones for FJR1300 side panel/gas tank trim. Not cheap but work 90269-06081-00.
    The two at the fairing chin need to have a longer grip length due to going through two fairing pieces. All of these are 6mm dia.
