On both my old VFR's I had full luggage sets but I found that the one piece that got the most usage was the topcase. I like the look of the OEM topcase, but there is no way in hell I am spending ~$900 for that and the mounting kit. I have looked at the Givi setup, but I do not like the way it looks. It sticks up and back too far and it looks like it will break too easily. Such as this:

I only know of a few case manufacturers (Givi, Kappa, & Shad) but what I am hoping to find is a 35 liter topcase that I can put my helmet in at least and not look like a waiter with a serving tray.

As usual the OEM stuff looks nice but is not cheap.

I am not sure if you have anyone retailing stuff from the German firm SW-Motech over in the states. They offer a very neat looking mounting frame for the 1200s but when a top-box is fitted it partly encroaches on the pillion seat. You would also have to add a suitable mounting plate to match whatever type of top box you buy to fit on the rack. There are plenty available both new and used on eBay over in Europe, but once you add in international shipping and taxes you may be close to the OEM price.

Does anyone know if the OEM 45l top box and mounting will fit on a 2012? It looks like they were made available for newer models. I think these are the correct part numbers. I couldn't find a complete kit, like they have for the 31l, so I'm not sure it is worth the extra cost.

    08L73-MJM-D10 - bracket
    08L71-MJM-D10 - carrier
    08L72-MGE-D41ZC - box
    08F75-MGE-800 - backrest pad

Any other advice or comments regarding the 31 vs 45 liter box?
