Hi all....Welp, I FINALLY picked up my 06 black beauty a few days ago. Went on my first REAL ride of 100 miles or more on Sunday. Going over the bike now to clean it up and remove the hand rails in the back and I noticed the tool kit.

Ummm, what is SUPPOSED to be IN this kit??? All i see are 2 peices of metal that look like a ? mark when you attach them. Is THIS supposed to the kit we carry around in case of a road side break down? Because the only thing I can see this thing being useful for is scratching the paint.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

All mine came with is a screwdriver and an allen wrench. Total rip-off.

I cant speak for the 04, but on my 98 I got a pretty standard toolkit with hex wrenches, boxed and open end in 8-14 mm, flat and phillips scredriver and a couple special tools like the chain adjustment thing (is it a spanner? I dunno) thye're in a black bag strapped under the back seat...

Kanf - I've got an '06 and that's what mine contained as well. My reaction was similar to yours upon discovery, "where the hell is the rest of it?". Pretty lame, a bike with an msrp above $10k deserves a lot better.

Most of the stuff in the standard Honda tool kits are junk. This seems to be the industry standard - same with cars.

For the VFR the most important tool is the spanner and handle to adjust the chain. Dont lose that - chain adjustment is a PIA without it.

I usually only carry any of the stuff if I'm headed for a longer trip, and also throw in some more stout forged steel wrenches and sockets.

I called my dealer today, and they told me that Honda cut the tools in the tool kits down to what I got (screwdriver and allen wrench). I had to order the kit to get the rest. It retails for @60.00.

Kanf - don't ditch the two pieces that look like an ?! - ones for adjusting the chain tension the other for the preload on your rear suspension. The one with the longer gap between the 'teeth' is use for the chain adjustment. As to the value of lugging around the rest...
I'd hang on to the 17mm (god knows what that is in imperial!) ring spanner - it fits your sump drain bolt and pinch bolt for the rear wheel.

Thanks for all the info everyone. It looks like we got jipped with a lousy kit. Oh well. Next step is to find a decent one that I can carry with me and fits in the same place under the seat.

Anyone found a kit that is worth a look at?

whats interesting is that there is a huge tool kit that shows up in the micro-fiche of these bikes. Supposedly, whats in the micro-fiche catalogs should also come with the bike. I ordered a full tool kit since I got NOTHING with my bike, not even spanners. Chain adjustments have gone like this for me:

    Loosen pinch bolt

Take huge screwdriver, place tip against the edge of the adjustment "cog" that is inbetween the chain sproket and the hub

Take large hammer, and hit the screwdriver until the "cog" moves a bit

test for new tension on chain

    repeat if necesary!

This was the only way I could do it without the damn tools!
