    Hey everyone,

So I have had typical charging issues with my 02. The stator plug is burning and the battery isn't holding a charge. Voltage is around 13 volts running, never gets to 14 so I'm sure the RR is bad. I checked the stator for voltage and ohms. .5 ohm between any wire and 70 volts at 5000rpm. so it tests good, but man does it look like it got hot. Anyone think there is a risk leaving it in? I'm putting in a new RR.

sounds like your problems are wiring harness. A poor connection at the stator to harness plug possibly. Or just about any of them really. I'll bet you put in a new RR and so no change unless you find and fix the problem in your wiring harness.

Stator to harness definitely, the recall harness was done last year and the original was in bad shape at that time. All of the wiring is good now except for the stator plug and that's getting replaced now. So hopefully the stator holds up after some hard years of VFR factory wiring

Anybody know if the recall harness is a good or as big as the VFRness harness?

I don't know about the rest of it, but your stator looks as bad as mine did when it failed. It cost me almost $400 to have the bike towed when it did fail, so I would probably consider replacing it now, regardless of the fact that it's still working in some capacity. Just based on its appearence; I gotta think that it's ready to quit.

I tend to agree with havcar on the condition of the stator. The wire that makes up the windings has a thin protective/insulative coating (can't remember the name; Glyptol?) which gets pretty brittle after it gets hot. It might be OK for a while, but additional heat and vibration will most likely do it in.

Edit: Glyptol is actually a company; my mistake, although they do make this type of product. As far as I can tell, the wire itself is coated with a varnish for primary electrical insulation. The secondary material applied after the coils are wound can also be a varnish or epoxy type material. Just FWIW, the secondary material mechanically binds the windings together and also conducts heat away from the individual wires. There are always a lot of air gaps in round wire windings, and the secondary material transfers more heat away from the wires than free air can. Thank you, Google!

Just a quick note - I was on the other VFR sight this morning, and Tightwad made a post about his site recently being hacked (Wire My Bike) He's working on getting it fixed, but sounds like anyone visiting can be easily redirected to porn sights.

I was looking on wiremybike and they say rick's stator won't work on a 2002. Ricks website shows it will. Anyone use one on their 2002?

Don't know about Rick's other than it's got 4 wires where the OEM has 5. Definitely agree it's your Stator/RR connector, sounds like the same grief as I just had with my VFR. The loco uh local shop installed an OEM RR and Electrosport Stator only to have the new stator burn out minutes after I got the bike back. The shop then installed an OEM stator which also would have cooked off if the tech wasn't watching for a repeat. After another 6 weeks, consultations with Honda and Google, the shop removed the connector, soldered the wires to each other and viola: problem solved. I did note the voltage was no different from before the initial burnout but with a VFRness installed, voltage is now solidly in service manual specs.

I agree that the VFRness is the way to go for '02-'05 but I would stay with OEM for the stator. I know that Cyborg had a rough go with OEM, but that's unusual. Aftermarket failures are very common. There are several members here who have tried aftermarket for financial reasons and have had them fail, costing them more money then if they had just bought OEM to begin with. My OEM stator took one hour to replace and I havn't had an issue since.

my old stator was smelly and burnt/when checking I disconnected from the harness and check AC at the plug from the stator. Tested BAD./replaced with new honda official stator and no more problems. Same R/R is going strong. It is amazing how hot an aluminum frame gets, even the swing arm on my bike is hot hot hot.

I have seen a few threads about electrosports going bad, but from what I gathered Rick's have a good reputation. If I've missed something about them, I'd like to read about it.
Still not sure if I will replace the stator yet as it is perfectly within spec and though it's dark on one side, it isn't burnt to ash.
