So I went out for the first real ride of the year post Stator R/R issues yesterday. Was a short 120mile loop as I had to be to my son's birthday party by 4. The tires that are currently on Silver are Pirelli Diablos with about 4500 miles on them. I looked at them prior to leaving while I was checking tire pressures and chain health. Looked damn good to me. Fast forward to 3:30 in the afternoon and I pull into the place where the party was being held. Sit down on the curb behind the bike to take off my boots and riding gear and this is what I see. WTF I knew I had hit some cheese grater pavement a few times but no more than 5-10 miles of it total throughout the trip. So here I am 40 some odd miles from home with that. Two decisions as I see it tow it or baby it home. I chose the latter option. Took it nice and easy left the party at about 6 got home around 830. So here she sits in the garage while I wait for my PR4 GTs to get here.
500lb bike with luggage and my large 300#plus carcass on it and I'll take the stiffer sidewall. especially with the Beirut-esque condition of alot of our better motorcycle friendly roads.
Pirellis do that for some reason, they look fine then suddenly they show cord. By towing you did the safe thing therefore the right thing however a it happened to a friend last year on a 954 on the way home from a 4 day tour with Pirelli Rossos and he made it the 350 miles home from that point without drama. We joked about wrapping duct tape around it but he was confident they'd make it no worries especially as it was a cool day, would never attempt it on Michelin pilot Powers though.
Mine did that. I had diablo rosso IIs and they looked ok then I rode them to work and home about 70 miles. I came home and cords.
4500 miles is a lot for Diablos. THere's nothing wrong with those tires, you were just at the utter end of their mileage expectancy. Let us know how you like those PR4s. I can't say enough good things about my Pirellii Angel GTs, but if everyone thinks the PR4s are like the second coming of christ, I might try them after my next puntured rear tire, or 'annual tire replacement' as I like to call it.
I had a Bridgstone BattleAxe that did the exact same thing. Fine one day, the next I had tons of cord showing. Granted, it was a 110 mile day~
