With only having 600 miles on a 05 VFR, I purchased a month ago used that had 1,046 miles when I bought it with the stock Dunlop sportmax two D204, would the upgrade to the Pilot Power (Front) & Pilot Road 2 (Rear) be a good idea? Or should I just keep running the Dunlop's. I ride slow and I'm not trying to keep up with anyone just want to have good solid tires that I can have some confidence in that will do it all when I need them.

While the D204's are not very good tires, if your not an aggressive rider I would just use up whats left on those tires. They should go to 4500 - 5000 miles easy.

On the other side of the fence the Pilots are very good tires and will out perform the D204s. I would like to try that combination myself. The newer Dunlop RoadSmarts and Qualifiers are very good too.

About the 204's (They were designed about 1995ish) - my guess is Honda got a huge deal on them and uses them to get bikes in the showroom and out the door. I would say thats about it.

Get the tires you want and keep the others as a spare set.

The only concern about the power pilot up front and road in back is having different profiles on the tires. The road being a touring tire it has a more rounded profile and the pilot being a sport tire it has a more trianglular profile. Both profiles offer different turn in rates. The grip and all other differences are probably minimal.

I have heard of others using this configuration but not sure of thier riding style. Remember one man's aggresive riding style is another man's commute.

    Dump the D204K's YESTERDAY!!!

ANYTHING you could buy will be potentially better. I put up with them for 6000 miles until I did a MSF ERC 2 years back. I am an extremely good rider, I would be willing to put my skills up against anyone. When I was in that class, the bike felt nervous & the front tire was all over the place. I asked the instructor to take a spin. He went around 2 corners, rode back up & said, "Get rid of these tires, NOW." Because of the D204K, I don't think I'll ever actually purchase a Dunlop tire again.

Based on recommendations from this board, I purchased Continental Road Attacks. I have 4000 hard driven miles on them. I can barely tell any wear on the back & the front looks about 50%. The wear is not why I like these tires so much. My bike is a completely different machine with these tires. They handle superbly, feedback is 20 times better, turn in is much approved, I could go on.

Continental are my favorite car tires & every car I've owned in the last 16 years has used Continental & nothing else. I really don't se any good reason to switch.

I don't really like or approve of running 2 different tires on a bike at the same time. The way I see it, there are more than enough variables involved that make riding dangerous as it is, I don't want anything that is under my control to be in question. I'm sure there are thousands of people that do this with no problems, I just don't like it. If you are leaning towards Michelin, I've heard nothing but good things from the local dealers about the Pilot Power 2CT's. For all intents & purposes, they are 2 different tires at the same time. They are specifically made for longer mileage with only a slight performance penalty. The only bad thing is their price. Expect to pay more for these than a comparable tire.

I'm with ya on the mixing of tire types - but with my usual burning up 2 rear for one front its pretty tempting.
The newer tires - Pilot Road 2's and the Dunlop RoadSmarts are supposed to be 2 compound tires with the stickier "sport" rubber on the sides with the harder longer wearing sport tour rubber in the middle. If I could match one for one with the front tire, that would be very cool for me.

Will I jump out and do it? I ask that every tire wear out time. I dont know, maybe yeah, more likely no. The Qualifiers have been very good to me, very good stick in the corners and know there gonna do what I want. Its would be pretty tough to change from the confidence they inspire.

Realistically - Michelins are kinda maybe wish - like to try until I look at the price tag.

The 2 most common FAQ's asked by riding students are:

    1) Which helmet is the best?
    2) What is the best tire?

To try to answer these question as best we can, all the rider coaches on base canvas the local dealer network frequently. I was just at one of the largest bike dealers in NJ yesterday & out of coincidence, I asked about tires. Without hesitation, the two tech's recommended Michelin. They said the 2CT is supposed to be just like running two separate model tires at the same time. In other words, Michelin made the rear tire so it would last as long as the front. I have not run this tire & haven't met anyone who has so I can't verify this. If it is true, it seems like a good idea to me.

I'm running the Mich 2cts and I like them a lot. I said to a riding buddy (met on VFRworld) half joking and half serious that you should consider a set of tires two rears and one front. The mich 2ct gets mbetter mileage than standard power pilots not better than some other tires. I have about 4K on them and may,MAY get another 1000 out of the rear. The front still looks good.
I weigh 250Lbs. I am SURE that contributes to some of my tire wear. As I am sure that my riding style also contributes to how they wear.

It is hard to say which tire is the best. It is possible to say that once you get some premium rubber on your wheels you will be better off.
I hear a lot of good things about conti road attacks, dunlop roadsmarts, dunlop qualifiers, mich power pilots, pilot 2ct, road 2s and avon tires venom and storm.
I think you would be well served to list things that are important to you. Then get the tire that most closely matches that list.
Mileage is important to many but my guess is that performance and stability is paramount to mileage with regard to most riders. Performance not mileage keeps you safe.
