Local Shop wants $40 to mount and balance each tire. Son's Hawk is getting new shoes, he ordered them from school. I got antsy and wanted to get it ready so I fab'd some stands and took the tires and rims to the shop. The Hawk has a single-sided swing arm like the VFR, so some shops don't mess with them. What have you paid last year/this year to have new shoes fitted? Dealing with tires is one of my least favorite garage activities, so I am willing to pay for this service instead of breaking down for a set of spoons and a balancer... just seeing if perhaps the cost benefit has changed beyond my tipping point. Just picked up a brand new set of Bridgestone BT016's for my '03 VFR800 at the local speed shop. Paid $318.00 for the pair. Mount and balance are always free with new tire purchase. Tire disposal however will cost you $5.00. It costs $75.00 to have those same new tires mounted and balanced at the dealer.
I pay 20 something off the bike, 40 something on If I actually bought the tire from the shop they do it for a little less My biggest issue is driving the 80+ miles to the closest shop
30$ on the bike and 18$ if you bring them the wheel. Two Bros. rocks, thanks JD! Less than 10 miles from da house too.
Local shop wants $30 each off the bike. another local shop wants $25 front and $45 rear off the bike. These tires being tubless makes changing easy. If you have the tools and you go through tires it is a good deal to change them yourself. You can get quality tires from $220-270 a set and mounting them in about 1hr or so in your garage. I go through roughly two sets a year so it is worth it for me to get the best prices on my tires and mount them. Just put on a set of PP2cts a couple weeks ago. Got the set for <200 delivered and I already had weights etc. So not a bad deal.
I put up this poll at the last rally I was at. Several dudes were saying they pay 50-75 bucks PER TIRE to mount. I thought I heard wrong, or understood wrong. Both confirmed that they paid for tires, and then it was another 50 bucks. I thought that was absurd. My Kawi dealership (closest) does it for 20 per rim, bring in the bike. If I took off the wheel and brought them the tires, I suspect they would do it for 20 total. Nice guys. I don't want to fck with them, so I think 20 per is reasonable. If it was 35, I would still do it but feel lousy. If it was 40+ per rim, I would invest in the better tools and do it myself. I don't get new tires every year, either. Some guys need tires all the time.
I picked up the Harbor Freight tire stand & mc attachment for under $100 on sale, also just got their balancer for about $30 on sale. The local Goodyear shop gave me a half dozen wheel weight strips for free. It's a little bit of work changing your own but after a few times gets much easier. It's more than paid for itself and getting a set of Pilot Powers for $157 shipped to my door makes it worth it to me to do my own.
I have a No-Mar tire changer and ballancer and they are worth every cent. I can even do car, truck and trailer tires. The owners Steve and Sue are great people and active riders too. No-Mar: Scratch Proof Wheel Locking System, Beats Coats 220 - Safe for Carbon Fiber Wheels.
