OK, give me some guidance here. I joined this group before I bought my VFR because I wanted to find out what kind of issues there might be. One of the things I really liked is the sense of humor that most everybody seemed to have, most of the time. The threads tend to wander a bit, some more than others, but I cannot figure out what gets the occasional member(s) so bothered.

Most everybody has been really helpful, other than occasional comments from a few self-righteous folks having a bad day (gee, I've never seen THAT before, nor have I ever had a bad day…).

So help me out here. This is the first time I have been an active participant in a "User Group", and my intent is to give as much as a get, from a technical point of view and a camaraderie point of view. Is there any sort of general rule that defines what the boundaries are with regard to thread replies?

I would say you pretty much nailed it in your post. Try and keep a sense of humor and realize people have a different view on just about everything. I like this site because the Mod's allow most threads to continue even if they wander off topic. For the most part the group here is great, if you want to see something different try going to some of the liter bike sites.

Lgn: That's a question that Michael can field since I'm likely on the wrong side of that fine boundary line some of the time :wnik:, but he lets it stretch some, or I jump back.

I've just tried to treat people like I'd like to be treated, remember that in a written forum - emotions are hard to read, and the private message follow-up can head off a nasty public exchange.

Most folks are just trying to help someone else with stuff we like doing.

It was fun to meet Bubba Z. in person after talking on the forum some. It was like the first time someone came over to play from school when I was a kid. What part of the world are you parked in?

Every once in a while, someone gets crazy because they feel strongly on an issue. The cooler heads realize that people are different and appreciate different viewpoints. So, if you keep in mind most of what we do is like taking an informal poll, feelings can be spared. If you feel strongly on an issue, express yourself without pointing fingers or making personal attacks. Enjoy hanging out, I do.

If you're pissed about a post and your fingers are poised over the keyboard ready to pounce - please take a deep breath, count to 10, exhale. Aw...

Its winter too Lgn and that seems to make the threads a little more...heated and off topic sometimes LOL!

The high majority of people here are cool, even when they get out of line. Remember, its the internet and it can be hard to read people and sometimes shit comes out wrong or is misunderstood.

As Nozzle said, its good to get together with other forum members. I hope to ride with the noz man again, but more importantly, after hanging with nozzle I know him better so his posts are easier to decipher and pick out the humorous tone vs. the serious tone.

I wish sometimes all us VFRWorld members could meet up in person, it would help eleviate the petty attackes and misunderstandings.

Thanks, all. Being unfamiliar with protocols and etiquette is always a bit uncomfortable, so thanks for being gentle (I won't say "It was my first time". Oops, too late...). Sometimes I can see what triggers the reactions, and other times it eludes me completely, no matter how many times I re-read the replies.

Nozzle, before I forget, I live in California, about 40 miles North of San Francisco, and about 5 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, in one of those towns that nobody's heard of by a river that almost nobody's heard of.

    Thanks again, gang!

    So for example... (I'm kidding)

Wrong: "Dude, you are an idiot for saying flaming debates rule"
Right: "Modified-motorcycle-with-extended-fork-tubes-and-open-exhaust-pipes, I would like to suggest that any online debate provide unwanted stress in my forum reading experience" :yield:

(oh no, there is that line behind my heels again...)

lgn...if you decide to paddle down the river to the Ocean, turn left along the shoreline and work your way around to me  There's a cold beverage waiting.

The only thread topic that I cringe on because I know what's about to happen is the V-Tec "Friend or Foe" or 5g or 6g threads in the middle of winter started by some non searching and uneducated Noobie. I know the thread starter is just seeking out education but this picture will explain my first thought...

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Just be respectful and have a good sense of humor. Don't be afraid to give your opinion, and don't get upset when 50 people tell you how wrong your opinion is.

Even when my opinion is right and theirs are wrong? Actually, I'm used to that, just like everybody else. My ex once asked me, "Doesn't it bother you to be right all the time?", to which I replied, "It doesn't bother me too much, but it sure seems to piss off a lot of other people". That might explain the "ex" part...

Nozzle: You are a gentleman. If I start paddling now and take advantage of the Panama canal, I could be there in about, say, 2-3 years, if nothing goes askew. Make it 5-6 years if I bypass the canal... Maybe we should just ride to Missouri or Colorado.

You're not suggesting that your ex ever questioned your judgement, or thought that you had survived due to dumb luck until she came along to properly supervise you, are you?

I'd say we are pretty lenient here. Just try not to drop the F bomb without a * in the spelling. If you read a message and it pisses you off, read it a couple times and wait before you reply. That's what I try to do unless I just feel like being an ass which we all do from time to time. Don't worry. Even if you piss off a few people, we are very reluctant to ban people unless they are just constantly flame baiting.
