This is a Canadian bike just to clarify. My 98 has a 'flat' ignition area mostly silver. The 00 has raised black plastic around it with the markings on off etc, was wondering since they are different if it has a chip. Dealer only supplied 1 key.

The European models have the Honda HISS system, this is clearing identified on the ignition barrel with the word HISS. This was introduced in 2000, so the Canadian models may have a blank plate where the HISS reader ring goes ! Have a look at bikepics.com & you can see some of the Euro models top yoke/triple-T.

I have a Canadian model 2000 VFR800 and was able to get a working spare cut by a local locksmith so I would say we don't have a chip in the key.
